Images shared with Reuters showed thick smoke blanketting the sky, rising from Kihei, and seen from miles away.

Maui Mayor Mike Victorino said at a press conference with local media on Thursday night, that the fire had not been contained as it has burned around 3,000 acres (12 kilometres).

Emergency management sent alerts to mobile phones asking Kihei residents to evacuate.

Local media reported that fire that began from Thursday morning quickly grew out of control, prompting road closures.

Shelters have been set up in nearby areas to accommodate evacuees.
