WEB EXTRA: Sushi Restaurant Catches Fire

Five sushi restaurants in Madison, Wisconsin experienced fires after a tempura-like 'crunch' spontaneously burst into flame.

Crunch is a water and flour batter that is deep-fried in either soybean or canola oil and then sprinkled over sushi rolls.

Both cooking oils are known to be combustible under certain circumstances.

The crunch was piled and stored in a bowl that didn't allow the heat to naturally dissipate.

Two restaurants that experienced the phenomenon suffered a combined $575,000 in damages.
