Speaking in North Carolina on Wednesday (July 18), Trump told supporters that a delegation led by Vice President Mike Pence and members of Congress visited border detention facilities last week and reported that they were clean with air conditioning and water.
Pence visited detention centers in Texas last week.
Following the visit, he said he knew "we'd see a system that was overwhelmed." Pence's comments came as Congressional Democrats who had also visited detention centers decried the conditions in emotional testimony on Capitol Hill.
Trump has made cracking down on illegal immigration a centerpiece of his administration, which is trying to deal with a surge of mostly Central American families crossing the U.S.-Mexico border.
