The American rapper A$AP Rocky has pleaded not guilty to a charge of assault in relation to a street fight last month in Sweden.

The American rapper A$AP Rocky has pleaded not guilty to a charge of assault regarding last month's street fight in Sweden.

The 30-year-old, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, has been in detention for weeks over the brawl in Stockholm.

He was specifically charged with assault causing actual bodily harm.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) REPORTER, SAYING: "Have you got anything to say about the Swedish legal system?" Wading through huge crowds on Tuesday (July 30) morning, Rocky's mother, Renne Black, here in the Swedish capital on the first day of her son's trial.

The case has drawn huge media attention, forcing the trial to be moved to a secure courtroom where more than 50 journalists as well as Rocky's mother watched proceedings.

In court, prosecutors said Rocky threw a person on the ground before he and two of his entourage kicked and punched him.

Rocky's lawyer says he's innocent and the rapper himself has always maintained that it was a case of self defense.

Before his arrest, Rocky said on social media that two men were following his team and that he didn't want any trouble.

Even Donald Trump has got involved in the case, tweeting earlier this month that he would be speaking to the Swedish prime minister to help the rapper.

The prime minister says he will not intervene.
