Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Representative Peter King (R-NY) say, if anything positive comes out of the tragedies in El Paso and Dayton, it would be to pass a House bill tightening background checks on firearms. The lawmakers are urging Senator Mitch McConnell to call an emergency session of the Senate to vote on H.R.

8.

The legislation closes a series of loopholes on the purchase of fire arms. Senator Schumer and Congressman King also urged President Donald Trump to endorse increased background checks before any gun is purchased.

The legislation was already passed in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The bill addresses background checks for felons, persons with significant mental health issues and domestic violence cases.

The lawmakers add that 90 percent of Americans support increased background checks, despite lobbying from the National Rifle Association.
