The trial of former Obama administration lawyer Greg Craig began with jury selection in Washington, D.C., on Monday, yet another case that grew out of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation.

Craig is charged with misleading Justice Department investigators about the work his law firm did in 2012 for the pro-Russia government of Ukraine.

Craig had produced a report that supported the prosecution of a political enemy of then-President Viktor Yanukovich.

That work earned his firm more than $4 million.

Prosecutors say Craig had failed to register as a foreign agent as required under the Foreign Agents Registration Act.

Craig's law firm was hired by the Yanukovich government at the suggestion of Paul Manafort, President Donald Trump's former campaign manager who is now serving time for lobbying violations and financial crimes.

Defense lawyers say Craig is being unfairly singled out, arguing that similar behavior by others has been overlooked in the past.

Craig has pleaded not guilty.

If convicted on the single felony charge, he faces up to five years in prison.
