3 this sunday we've all been waiting for.
Grant's house for young adults and children with special needs is opening.it's a story we've been covering for years now.news 18's isabella caruso tells us how grant's house isn't just a house.
It's a home.
3<tamara: "when someone comes in, whether you're a child or an adult, you automatically feel happy."
I'm happy and i'm alive.
That's what grant house would say.cooper: "everyone knows someone like my brother grant.
And we can help them here at grant's house."
Bright, bold and big.the new grant's house is giving kids and young adults with special needs a safe place to learn and grow.it's all in memory of the kid who dreamed it first.
Tamara: "grant wrote a paper his senior year at mccutcheon and it was 'how i would change my community.'
In that paper he wrote that he would have a place for kids to make friendships and to grow."
Grant passed away at the age of 25 before making that change.
So his family and community did it for him.
Tamara: "we have been very blessed by this community over the last couple of years to raise 3.6 million dollars to provide this facility with wabash center."
And after years of planning, grant's house is finally opening its doors.
The house family is inviting everyone to see the new space this sunday.tamara: "we want the entire community to come out."
This house was built from the ground up.
Tamara: "we were housed in a small church."
But to make grant's big vision a reality, a much larger space was needed.
Tamara: "it's a 50,000 square foot building and it's all been raised with labor of love by our community.we have a sensory room for kids with autism.we have an art room, a music room, a library, an emerging adults room, a rec room, a simulated apartment so that they can live on their own."
Cooper: "grant's house is a beautiful building for the kids to come to."
But if you look behind all the books, the games and bright artwork that fills the walls, cooper says his brother is there.
Now when we walk around it kind of brings my brother back alive.
Or we see a pop tab that he always collected on the ground.
Yesterday i actually found one as we were walking in the doorway so that was pretty cool."> 3 the free celebration of the grand opening of grant's house is this sunday, august 18th.
