Hong Kong protesters demand action on mob attack

Thousands of Hong Kong residents held an anti-government protest on Wednesday at a suburban subway station that was attacked by a mob last month, angry that nobody has yet been prosecuted for the violence.

Pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong engaged in new clashes with police Wednesday at a suburban subway station, the site of a mob attack on demonstrators last month.

Thousands took to the city's Yuen Long station, spraying fire extinguishers at police and barricading themselves inside.

Others spread oil over the station floor to stop police from advancing.

Outside, squads of riot police marched on protesters that had blocked entrances to the subway and closed off roads to the station.

The protesters are angry that no one has been prosecuted for violent assaults on demonstrators at the station last month as they returned from marching through central Hong Kong.

Demonstrators want to ensure that Hong Kong retains its autonomous status from mainland China, believing those freedoms are being eroded.

President Trump has sent mixed messages on Hong Kong, on Wednesday expressing renewed support for the pro-democracy protesters.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP SAYING: "I hope it works out in a humane way, and I think President Xi has the ability to make sure that happens." Trump has tried to tie the protests to talks to end a raging trade war with China, but has also said the matter is an internal Chinese affair.

Indians have done their best to respond to China's aggressive actions: Mike Pompeo

Speaking on India-China border tensions, US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo said, "I have spoken with Foreign Minister S Jaishankar a number of times about this. Chinese took incredibly aggressive actions and Indians have done their best to respond to that. There aren't many neighbours that can satisfactorily say that they know where their sovereignty ends and the Chinese Communist Party will respect that. That is certainly true now for people of Bhutan. The world must come together to respond to this. This increasing revisionist effort that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is engaged in is something that President Trump has taken incredibly seriously." He further said, "World has seen true colours of Chinese Communist Party and I am convinced more than ever that free people of the world will come to understand the threat. The impact General Secy Xi Jinping has on the world is not good for free and democracy loving people."
