A small update to your driver's license could have a big impact if you don't have it and want to travel next year// thanks for joining us at nine// we're talking about real id// it's meant to be an added security feature before you board a flight// but if you don't get out your wallet and check before october 1, 2020---it may just cause you a headache.

Courtney ann jackson explains// if not---you've got some time.

"we're asking them to go ahead and get their license renewed or get a duplicate.

They can come into our offices or go online and make it an easy process."

Since tuesday made it one year till the change takes effect---efforts to better inform the public are ramping up.

"we were actually the first state to become real id compliant.

So we're in the process now---we're wanting to avoid that rush and not fight people at all.

We do have a full year for people to come in.

So, we're not expecting a big rush.

We're wanting them to go ahead and gradually do it now."

The hope is that a combination of online renewals and the new pilot program allowing you to make online appointments to go into a driver license station will also cut down on any rush.

But the expiration date impacts what your next steps are if you're lacking the update.

"you can renew up to six months up to your expiration date.

So you don't have to wait till your license expires."

So what if your license doesn't expire till say 2021?

You'll need to request a duplicate license.

That'll cost you 11 dollars---but that's no comparison to the cost of a flight you wouldn't be able to board without the updated id.

Caj wcbi news you don't have to worry about the gold star for things like voting, driving and everyday activities.

This would be for flights and federal buildings.

Governor phil bryant signed a proclamation today at the request of the mississippi forestry commission.

Under the order, outdoor burning of any kind is not allowed.

Anyone caught violating the burn ban can be fined and held responsible for any damages caused by a fire.

So far 42 hundred acres have burned across the state due to wildfires.

The ban is in place until further notice.

A second cold front moves through monday and it is poised to bring much cooler temperatures and a better opportunity for rain.

Wednesday night: mostly clear and quiet.

Lows in the upper 60s to around 70.

City leaders are considering regulations for those renting homes through the popular service.

Our quentin smith speaks with an alderman and an air bnb host about the possible changes.

He has the story.

It's a proposal that was brought up during tuesday's board of aldermen meeting..

Whether to charge an annual fee to short term renters.

It's a hot topic, and many have mixed views on the idea... " i am not in favor.

I am againt being told how many times i can run my business."

Dorothy hendrick has been an air bnb renter in starkville for four years now.

She enjoys the business.

However what she doesn't enjoy is hearing about the the potential regulations aimed towards short term renters like her self.

" i find it unfair.

I think thaf they are punishing people for renting property they should impose the regulation fee on all investment property.

I think it's discriminatory."

The board of aldermen is considering implementing the following regulations: charging at $300 yearly license fee limiting the amount of time the property can be rented out to 10 weekends or 30 days out the year.

And requiring all property owners to live at the home they're renting.

"10 weekends?

They're pretty much serves the football market.

That pretty much serves the tourism part of the city and being able to have those large weekends covered, but then they're leaving us out in the cold for the rest of the year.

We can't pay our bills with just 10 weekends."

Ward 5 alderman hampton beatty brought up the idea and regulations during tuesday's meeting.

" short term rentals is just a revolving door.

It's people coming and going from everywhere."

He says the problem the city is running into is out of town renters.

He's says someone from out of town will rent out a home, but when the home isn't being used, it sits vacant, and he believes that damages the integrity of the neighborhood.

He wants the renters to be invested in the city of starkville "it's something that's happening.

It's a business, it'l change the nature of neighborhoods, maybe for the better, but we don't know and what we are trying to do is get a handle on it just before it's a lot of them out there, and then we look back and say oh, why didn't we take a look at this before there where a lot of them and these unattended consequences happen.

City leaders will host the first of two public meetings on this issue this thursday at the sports plex.

The public can come out and give their input about the proposed regulations.

The meeting will begin at 5:30.
