It is one of many rallies against climate change across the world organized for the next two weeks.

Sareena Dayaram reports.

Activist Greta Thunberg joined global climate protests from South Dakota Monday (October 8).

The sixteen-year-old made a surprise announcement she'd join a local march when she visited Native American reservations to meet with activists.

She led a march in downtown Rapid City.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) CLIMATE ACTIVIST, GRETA THUNBERG, SAYING: "We're standing up right now and we will not back down because we know what is at stake and we will never give up." Thunberg drew global attention after scolding world leaders at the U.N over climate change.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) CLIMATE ACTIVIST, GRETA THUNBERG, SAYING: " I should be back in school on the other side of the ocean.

Yet you all come to us young people for hope.

How dare you?

The Swedish activist is on an American tour ahead ahead of a UN-sponsored climate conference in Chile this December.

She's also the favorite to win the Nobel Peace Prize next week.

Her Monday march was one of many in cities around the world.

They're the beginning of two weeks of rallies to demand immediate action on the climate.

The protests just the latest stage in a global push for swifter steps on climate change led by environmental movement Extinction Rebellion.
