New MCC President Sangakkara - 'The time to grow Test cricket is now'

VIDEO SHOWS: INTERVIEW WITH NEW PRESIDENT OF THE MARLEBONE CRICKET CLUB MCC KUMAR SANGAKKARA SHOWS: LONDON, ENGLAND, UK (OCTOBER 17, 2019) (REUTERS-ACCESS ALL) 1.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) PRESIDENT OF MCC, KUMAR SANGAKKARA SAYING: "Well, I think the time to capitalise is now, you can't take four months since the World Cup final and then try to decide, what are we going to do with that because you've got a small window of opportunity here before people kind of try to move on.

I was there at the Bangladesh Pakistan game at Lord's and there were children allowed into the members stand at Lord's and it just changed the entire atmosphere.

It became this vibrant area to sit and watch the game.

And I think that is how we actually bring more fans to the game and take cricket to the masses.

In the UK less than 1 percent of state school children play sport.

They need to be given more opportunities.

So the MCC hubs through the MCC Foundation is trying to do just that.

We now have girls only hubs as well, so we have lots of young boys and girls taking into the sport.

I think the England team needs to make those connections as well.

The World Cup winning team, take them to the schools, have them talk to children, face to face in classrooms, have those conversations, look them in the eye and inspire them to kind of take up not just cricket, any sport, because it is such an important and integral part of having a healthy life growing up well, and also in terms of discipline and focus so that a lot of the pitfalls of modern life.

I think with that with disciplinary structure, that focus on something wholesome can probably be avoided." STORY: The new President of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara believes that Test cricket can capitalise on the growth of the shorter format game.

The ICC Cricket World Cup reached a thrilling climax at the home of the MCC, Lords earlier this year as the host nation England beat New Zealand in a super over to win their first ever World Cup title and Sangakkara, the first non-British President of MCC believes the interest shown during that event, can help to grow all forms of the game.

Sangakkara will hold his new post of President for one year, which will see England play Test Matches against West Indies and Pakistan, and an ODI against Australia.
