U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Saturday in New York City joined the "Bernie's Back" rally in Queensbridge Park and formally endorsed Senator Bernie Sanders for the White House.

(AOC and Bernie cheering together) U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Saturday formally endorsed Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders for the White House at a rally in New York City (SOUNDBITE) REPRESENTATIVE ALEXANDRIA OCASIO-CORTEZ SAYING: "I am proud to say the only reason that I had any hope launching a long-shot campaign for congress was because Bernie Sanders proved that you can run a grass-roots campaign and win in an America that we almost thought it was impossible." The backing of AOC, one of the leaders of the party's progressives and a frequent target of President Trump's attacks, is expected to help boost Sanders in his efforts to fight off fellow Democratic contender Elizabeth Warren who passed him in opinion polls behind former Vice President Joe Biden... (SOUNDBITE) SENATOR BERNIE SANDERS SAYING: "I'm proud to say that Alexandria will be campaigning for me" A member of AOC's freshmen progressive group known as "The Squad", U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar, endorsed Sanders on Tuesday….

And a third member of the group - Rep.

Rashida Tlaib - is also expected to endorse the Vermont Senator.... (upsound sanders) Sanders Saturday rally was held in in Queensbridge Park, near the 14th Congressional District that AOC represents.... It's the 78-year-old's first event on the campaign trail since his heart attack on October 1st, when he had two stents inserted to open a blocked artery….

The heart attack threatened to derail the campaign of the oldest candidate in the crowded Democratic field… but Sanders recovered and made it to the three-hour Democratic debate on Tuesday… And on Saturday, he reassured his supporters: "I am more than ready to be the president of the United States… in other words I am back!"
