Thank you for joining us tonight..

Recent violence has one starkville pastor on a mission to bring about change.

Pastor abdural lee is taking his ministry into brookville garden apartments// you may remember a fatal shooting happened at that complex just last week.

Our quentin smith tagged along with the pastor.

So quentin this is a part of his community outreach program?

That's exactly right scott, the pastor says he wants to make a difference... lee says he's disheartened and turned off by the recent violence he's seeing, now he wants to use his platform to spread god's word, and put an end to the senseless violence that he believes is plaguing the community.

Nat on a mission to create change.

Nat is pastor abdural lee.

He spent the day pounding the pavement..

Praying with residents in brookville garden apartments...both young... and old.... he's determined to do something about the recent rash of violence in his community.

"i just think it's an opportuniy to let people know that somebody do care."

See it's personal for lee.

Not only is he from starkville, but he also once lived in brookville garden apartments.

"i've dealt with a situation where one of my sons got in his own ordeal and i've lost mine before so my heart goes out, it really touches me deep down in my soul to see a parent have to lose their child or even have to deal with the fact of having a child be locked up.

I take that extremely personal."

His ministry takes him out of the pulpit and into the community he serves.

He wants others to learn from his mistakes and know they don't have to resort to drugs or violence.

"i'm not a judgmental pastor.

I understand what they're going through.

I understand that the kids are doing their thing, they're going through their transition and they just need somebody to care enough about them without judging them.

You have to love on people in order to get them where you need them to be."

He knows that if he wants to bring change he has to meet people where they are.

"it's in my ministry that i understood in order for me to bring them in, i have to go out and get them."

Lee knows that a problem this big is going to require a ?bigger?

Answer and more involvement from the community// "one person can't make the difference.

I can do what i can, but what about the rest of the people that's sitting at home and being judgmental about what's happening but never doing anything about it.

I would just love to see more people come together and start to reach out in communities like this and having more activities and things of that nature.

We got to pour back into our community."

Others joined lee as he prayed for those in community today.

Pastor lee says he won't quit.

He plans to go all thought the city spreading the lord's word and trying to bring about positive change in his hometown.

Jemarcus was a very loving person, he had a big heart.

A very loving person."

If the holiday if the holiday shopping season leaves you stressed when it comes to affording all the shopping---listen up.

It may seem easier to charge when your shopping list keeps growing.

And the pressure to please is knocking.

But courtney ann jackson has some words of warning from the experts and tips on how to avoid starting 2020 in the red.

Making a list and checking twice might be decent advice from the guy in the big red suit....and is echoed by financial planners like nancy lottridge anderson.

"we just get carried away and we don't realize until the damage is done and we get the bills."

A recent wallethub survey says about 35 million folks are still carrying last holiday season's financial baggage.

Anderson says that debt is really hard to get out from under that if you've been impulsive.

"we see people who have the lowest net worth, probably with the lowest incomes with the biggest credit card balances.

And those are also people who probably don't have good credit scores.

So, their interest rates are going to be much higher than the average credit card rate of about 15 percent."

There is a silver lining if you're worried about fitting in everything on your list.

"what we know in studies about money and happiness is that where we get the most bang for our buck is when we spend on experiences.

So, you know, baking cookies for someone, having a meal with them, maybe that's better than going and buying an object or having a gift in a box that you give to them."

Carrus king at hope credit union says saving in advance could reduce the stress down the road.

"my recommendation would be to join a christmas club.

And a christmas club is an account or some type of holiday account that you can set up that you can have it draft and help you prepare for the holiday season."

And he notes that every little bit helps--whether it's 10 dollars a year or... "you can take something as simple as a piggy bank and just save all of your change and around a year, you'd be amazed at how much change you save."

Another bit of advice from that financial planner---think about quality versus quantity and re-evaluate if everyone on your list needs a traditional gift.

Take vo off top tis the season to be jolly falalala-lalala// several area cities were merry and bright for christmas parades tonight// columbus, starkville amory, and louisville all hosting their annual parades// dozens lined the streets in the north mississippi towns to catch glimpses of all the lights// and of course santa was busy too showing up at each parade// and there's still more parades happening over the next couple of weeks// education plays a vital role towards their the future of our children// at vardaman elementary, educators there are making sure no child is left behind in the path to success.

Our stephanie poole has more in this story.

For the past 22 years, annie anderson has taught el at vardaman elementary school.

El is an english- language development program which serves students who come from non-speaking english homes.

"picture yourself going to a foreign country and not knowing the language.

You have to start from basics from the beginning.

Most of these kids when they start school they know no english."

Over 80 kids are enrolled in ms.annie's class , all ranging from kindergarteners to sixth graders.

Everyday students are taught writing, speaking, listening and reading skills.

"we've been very successful, as a matter of fact last year you know with our last year you know with our state testing accreditation and stuff, our el students received 31 out of the possible 35 points.

" but some days are more challenging than others... "i can remember when i started i was like i just want to see some of these kids graduate from high school because they would drop out of school not finishing."

That's why ms.annie and the entire school board work tirelessly to make sure these students will thrive in the el program and other class assignments, making sure they're ready for the next grade up.

"i'm so grateful and thankful to be working in a field so useful and being able to help.

All day these teachers and their aides are pulling the students and giving them extra tutoring and just extra help so we all work together as a group."

Reporting in calhoun county stephanie poole wcbi news anderson says the enrollment rate for vardaman elementary school el program is steadily increasing year after year.

It's cold and flu season across the area, and that has parents on high alert.

But when should you take your child to the emergency room and when can it wait?

We find out more in tonight's health talk with baptist.

Hi.

I'm dr pam sykes, a pediatrician at baptist memorial hospital-golden triangle.

One of the most common questions i get from parents is "when do i need to take my child to the emergency room?"

We need to remember that er stands for emergency room which means it is for life or death emergencies.

This includes health concerns that cannot wait till the morning when a patient could see their regular pediatrician.

The definition of an emergency can be subdivided by age and tonight we will discuss recommendations for infants younger than 2 months old.

An infant younger than 2 months old should be taken to the er if they have: a fever greater than 100.4 taken rectally.

For a baby younger than 2 months old fever is a significant finding that frequently requires admission to a hospital.

Difficulty breathing.

Breathing hard, fast, wheezing or labored is an emergency that should be evaluated immediately.

Vomiting which could cause dehydration.

I frequently remind my patients that er doctors are trained for life and death emergencies and are not trained for routine infant/child care.

A runny nose, cough, cold, congestion, constipation, pink eye& these are all symptoms that are not generally life threatening and are best managed by your child's regular physician.

Join us next time for health talk with baptist when we will discuss, "when do i need to take my infant/child to the er if they are older than 2 months old."

You got to talk about a shared vision.

You got to talk about them wanting to be at our place and building our program and wanting to be at ole miss.

When we were with kermit, he was the last person that we interviewed, and we knew within 5 or 10 minutes that it was different.

That's what i'm looking for here.

I want to sit down with somebody and see it in their eyes and see what their vision is, how excited they are for our opportunity.

That's what i'm going to look for and i think that search is going to be a very valuable resource as i go into this one."

In the meantime, carter says defensive coordinator mike macintyre has been promoted to interim head coach mississippi state senior center darryl williams named sec lineman of the week for his egg bowl performance... williams was the bulldogs' highest graded lineman, didn't allow a single pressure, and helped pave the way for 210 yards rushing... it's williams' third career honor from the sec mondays can be tough....but mondays also mean top plays!
