NATO summit opens to fracturing alliance

NATO leaders have gathered at a golf resort near London for a meeting beset with dispute, even by the standards of the Trump era.

National security disagreements between the member states include spending levels, the potential threat of China, and Turkey's future in the alliance.

The United States' ongoing trade disputes with European Union countries has also cast a shadow over the meeting.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said at the summit on Wednesday (December 4) that the recent attack at London Bridge shows "peace cannot be taken for granted" and "our deeds must match our words." On Tuesday (December 3) U.S. President Donald Trump, who in the past has called NATO obsolete, derided his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron for comments last month about NATO's strategic "brain death."
