In continuing coverage of news we brought you this morning, uwl football head coach mike schmidt has officially left the program to take the head coaching job at division-ii northern state university.
Northern state's ad josh moon, who is a uwl alum, officially welcomed schmidt to the position in a press conference today.
Schmidt says he's excited about the new challenge.
"it's a program that's in a great spot.
It's a program that's ready and able to make the next step, and so i'm just really happy and honored to be here and be a part of that."
Schmidt was 27- 13 in four seasons as head coach of the eagles.
Uwl athletic director kim blum says schmidt's departure came at a surprise, and credits him for putting the program in the right direction.
She adds that his successor is expected to meet the high bar that schmidt has set.
"it was a very difficult decision for mike.
He loves it here, and i think he's just taking advantage of a really awesome opportunity.
We never apologize for wanting to win games.
We want to continue what has been built over the past four years, and have full expectations that we will be in the playoffs in the very near future."
Blum says there's no timetable yet on a new hire.
She also did not specify who might be leading the program on an interim basis while the university goes through the hiring
