Tonight-- a story parents will be shocked to hear-- about a 40 year old man who police say grabbed and pinned down a child in school.
Ariana lake first broke this story--she joins us live with the latest in this investigation and what the west valley school district and sheriff's department are saying tonight when i first arrived here this afternoon--the district's resource officer was on scene investigating what happened.
We later learned from deputies that there had been a fight on campus involving half a dozen students.one boy was hit and had a bloody nose.police say one of the boys involved in that fight opened a locked door on campus to allow his father and 19 year old brother onto campus.once there-- the father apparently grabbed another of the boys involved in that fight-- and slammed him into a table, pinning him down.that's when a school official-- forced the man off the child.the district's resource officer arrived shortly after that.
Sue shields says safety is the district's top priority... (" 1:33:14"it is our number one priority to make sure that students feel safe and are safe.
And we can assure parents that the situation was resolved quickly," sue shields/west valley school dist.
Public relations director")the spokane county sheriff's office now leading this investigation.
They tell us although the 19 year old man was not involved in the fight-- he had previously been banned from campus-- so he's in trouble as well-- facing criminal trespass charges.
The father faces assault charges.
We do not know the age of the condition of the boy he went after.in spokane valley.

Four news now.

Sometime after that.....an alpha omega charter bus crashed into the school bus, killing the driver of the charter bus...the grant county sheriff's office says some of the 26 students on board the school bus suffered minor injuries...41 people - including the driver and a tour guide - were on the charter ...and some of those passengers also suffered minor injuries.
Between the rain and snow - it was a week of wet weather here in spokane ...chief meteorologist kris crocker is here to tell us if that pattern will continue through the weekend... 3 ((kris does first weather at chroma)) there's a good chance someone you know is suffering from some kind of mental illness.
It's a common struggle millions of people are dealing with across the nation.
In fact, one in five americans will experience mental illness this year.that's why spokane police officers are taking an extra step to help those people suffering.
Whenever there's an emergency related to mental health ... it's a police officer responding to the scene.
So, eastern state hospital and s-p-d are bridging the gap with a special program called "cop talk."
Our maher kawash is live in studio with what kind of impact it's leaving on patients.
Whether it's me, you ... an officer on the street, or a person with mental health problems ... there's at least one thing we all have in common.
We're all humans.
That's the point of this program--- to just remember that we are all people first.
Mental health isn't easy to talk about.
The c-d-c says about 50 percent of americans will be diagnosed with a mental illness at some point in their life so, spokane police officers are trying to figure out how to help.
00;01;19"it took 4 sheriff's to pin me down to the ground."03 without force.
Carrie christiansen, rn at eastern state"when i started working at eastern i heard a lot of stories from patients about dramatic detention or how they were scared of law enforcement."
Carrie christiansen gets a taste of both sides.
She's a nurse at eastern state mental hospital ... and a reserve officer with s-p-d.
She's played an important role in combining the two-- so patients and cops can interact ... just as people.
Eastern state mental hospital shared these stories and video with us 00;02;26"the challenge that i saw was there wasn't a good relationship between the hospital and police department ... there wasn't a lot of communicaiton."08 that's where cop talk bridges the gap.
This new program allows officers and patients at the hospital to learn from each other.
00;03;45"so we'd shoot basketballs, we'd play cards ... we would just talk about our lives and if they'd ask well what do you do ... who are you .... i would tell them im a police officer ... but if they didn't ask we would just talk."
09 the officers learn what triggers the patients.
Something as simple as the tone they use ... or calling the person in crisis by their first name ... can make all the difference.
00;04;39"there may be tension at first a lot of people come in here with criminal charges ... even on the civil side .,..
But they learn officer greg ... officer dave ... they're just two cool guys just like them ... just people getting through life."12 about 10 percent of emergency service calls are related to a mental illness.
This program allows each side to remember that a police officer, is a human first ... just like a person in crisis is human too.
00;05;56"maybe down the road ... somebody's life is saved because they learned how to be arrested properly" 06 spokane police says it's also a goal to have all of its officers trained to handle situations involving mental health.
