Take developing story stinger there are new developments in a story we first brought you last night at 6..

The pilot of a small airplane is out of the hospital and recovering tonight after crashing in oktibbeha county... the plane went down, just before 6 last night - narrowly missing a home on old highway 25..

The federal aviation confirms the plane ran out of fuel, which led to the crash.

The model of the aircraft is a 1965 champion.

The pilot is a major in the united states air force... the federal aviation administration was on scene today and will collaborate with the national transportation safety board to determine what caused the crash.

Take vo in monitor wcbi has confirmed the pilot is robert young from texas... he was on his way to sell the plane..

Before he went down, young contacted a local pilot who was able to direct help to the scene... our quentin smith speaks with that local pilot.... he joins us in the studio with more..

Aundrea, once young realized his plane was having issues, he immediately began trying to find a safe place to land..

Unfortunately .... there wasn't a safe landing zone nearby..

An area flight instructor heard the call come in... he immediately jumped into action... as daylight broke over the crash site, many can't believe that a houston pilot was able to walk away from this plane crash unharmed.

" he's very fortunate to be alive because the plane is destroyed."

The texas pilot was heading to the golden triangle regional airport when he started having trouble with his plane.

He then tried to redirect to george bryan airport in starkville... carl nuzzo, the chief instructor at accessible aviation, was able to talk to the pilot as the plane began to go down.

"i was on instrument training with a student and we were 12 miles shooting an instrument approach.

We called up traffic to self announce that we were coming again, and then he said he was ahead of us with a problem."

The plane reportedly ran out of fuel and the engine suddenly quit realizing the severity of the situation, nuzzo and the pilot began discussing ways to safely land the plane... "i said ok, i'll stay up high ad you go ahead in and i'll stay out of your way.

Then he said he might not make it and wanted to know if there's any place to land short of the field, and i said no, you've got about half a mile on the clear way on the airport property, otherwise there's no place to go."

"the pilot tried to put it down on the road but he said there's a lot of traffic on the road so he just averted over just a little bit and there was the trees."

Less than 5 minutes after losing power, he crashed in the middle of these trees.

Investigators on scene say the situation could have ended much worse.

"in an airplane like that you can get it slowed down.

He might've been 35-40 miles an hour, so it was not much more than a car crash and he had a seatbelt on so he's still very lucky to be alive."

Take vo in monitor i'm told the pilot was at the scene today talking with the federal aviation administration as they conducted their investigation..

A salvage company will load up the plane and haul everything away.

We will continue to follow this developing.

Story and bring you the latest as it becomes available first look stinger first look summary: a storm system will develop in the gulf this weekend and it will spread rain across the region.

It's still uncertain as to how much may fall but it could be anywhere from a trace to over 2?.

Thm spirals away early next week and that will allow sun and unseasonably mild air to settle in just in time for christmas.

Hundreds of northeast mississippi families will celebrate christmas next week with plenty of gifts thanks to the salvation army's 'angel tree' program.

As our allie martin reports, this morning hundreds of volunteers help pass the gifts out.

Nats open "yall ready" angel tree distribution day started early at the tupelo furniture market.

Hundreds of volunteers have sorted the toys, clothes and other gifts, according to wish lists from each child, or "angel" nats number calling and on distribution day, another army of volunteers helped load presents into cars for parents and guardians.

"god has blessed me and blessed those people to give those gifts, it's just a blessig from god and i'm so grateful and thankful."

Thirty members of the junior beta club at milam elementary were among the volunteers.

For the students it was a lesson in service and thankfulness.

"it helps to show some of these kids how important it is to do community service and how it can help the community.

" standup bridge families also get a turkey or a chicken for their christmas dinner.

It takes a lot of resources to make angel tree happen and it is a community effort.

"individual donors, banks have donated, car dealerships, lots of folks sponsoring different things throughout the community and of course the nickels, dimes pennies and dollars that go into the red kettle."

This year's angel tree program provided christmas gifts for four hundred children.

In tupelo, allie martin, wcbi news major morton says the donations at the red kettles are down this year compared with last year.

So, bell ringers will be out in force at stores throughout the area this last weekend before christmas vo off top a real community effort is making christmas brighter for some families of pontotoc city school students..

Residents came together to donate money so that teachers could buy toys, clothes, and other items for students whose families might be struggling this time of year..

Pontotoc police officers will deliver those gifts.

It is a way for the district to make sure every child has a memorable christmas.

"so our staff really knows who is going to need something this christmas and we take care of students who go to school here but we also take care of older and younger siblings and make sure their parents have something under the tree as well."

"what makes this program unique is these families are not seeking assistance, but were nominated by teachers and when we reach out to these families, they usually respond with tears, tears of gratefulness," this is the third year for the program, known as "christmas warriors."

Deliveries wrap up friday.

Stinger a generous donation has students at an area school kicking up their heels..

We explain when we come back... a generous gift from has students at plantersville middle school dancing in the aisles.

The tupelo elvis fan club donated over 3 thousand dollars to the school, to expand its dance classes.

Those classes are taught during school hours by two professional dancers from tupelo.

The donation will allow students in all grades to learn the benefits of ballroom dancing "it is physical activity, it's mental, builds relationships with students, teaches students how to interact with the opposite gender, it's a neat experience and works both sides of the brain, which we love from an academic point."

"we do this in elvis' giving spirit and we also like to target kids that remind us of elvis, if this were happening in his day, he would be one of these kids, he gave back to the community and that's where we got the idea to give back."

Plantersville students will join "dancing with the king" in april.

That event raises money for scholarships for young dancers.

Our own allie martin will also be a featured dancer..
