A Fort Wayne student is stuck in Peru because of COVID-19.

A fort wayne student is stranded in peru as many countries across the world close their borders because of covid -19.now that young woman and thousands of others are trying to come home.

Fox 55's jentill neal talked to her about what's going on.

Jentill?

That's right brianna, abigail smith of fort wayne is in peru right now trying to figure out a way to get home since no one can leave.she tells me the one day that she planned to fly out- that flight got cancelled.... and now she and others are just wondering when they'll return.

Stuck in a foreign country... ?nats?abigail went on a mission to help others, and now her mission is getting home.<abigail 04:08:27-04:08:38 "i am an intern here in cusco, peru with a charity.

That does projects with women's empowerment, environmental stability, and also street dogs.

There's a huge street dog problem here."

After three months she was supposed to return on monday -- but peru suddenly closed its borders.

04:10:29-04:10:46"literally the president came on sunday night and he said we're closing the borders around 8pm- 9pm.

And then he gave us all of monday until 11pm to get out and of course all the flights were booked.

They canceled my flight on monday even though that was the time get out and they cancelled it."

As you can see in this video, no one was without a mask, but she says you can't even get inside the grocery store without one now- just hoping what they have will last until that time.04:09:28-04:09:53 "now there are police roaming the streets and if you're a foreigner, who is trying to get food or water or anything, the police will stop you and send you back to your hotel or hostel.

Currently in certain areas, they've cut off water in cusco."now she along with 1300 americans are staying put waiting for the greenlight to come back.

She says she and her roommates pitched in to stock up on a ton of food on monday.04:11:48-04:12:11"it's totally up in the air.

They gave us 15 days but there might be 15 days and just one day to get out and flights after those 15 days flights are either $2,000 or $3,000 flights and a lot of people can't afford it.

I know i can't afford it.

It's just not a good way to handle a situation.

And a lot of people here are going to remain stuck."

Smith says there is a u-s tasks force to help trapped americans and they are working on something with commercial airlines but she says there is not enough communication among law enforcement for people to leave.

So even if people have documents to leave they are still stuck because of police there.reporting live jentill neal...
