'Total waste' for farmers to dump milk- NY Gov. Cuomo

Farmers dumping milk is a 'total waste,' according to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who on Monday announced that the state government will work with dairy producers to process the excess milk into products like yogurt and cheese for food banks.

"Some farm cooperatives are actually dumping milk because the market can't consume it.

This is just a total waste to me.

We have people downstate who need food.

We have farmers upstate who can't sell their product," Cuomo told reporters at a press briefing on Monday (April 27).

To stop the dumping of milk, Cuomo announced New York will be partnering with dairy producers to process excess milk into products like yogurt, cheese, sour cream, and cream cheese.

The products will be distributed to food banks and people in need, according to Cuomo.

The governor also said the state would tap an emergency fund to give $25 million to help depleted food banks.
