Great to be here stay-at-home order not stopping the cottonwood mothers day rodeo.

Plenty of people coming to together to watch the annual event.

Well good evening and it's great to be here with you on this mothers dayãas we get ready another weekãa week of business opening back upã as the governor threatens to pull disaster relif funding from three california counties..

And today the big gathering in cottonwood.

That's where hundred's of people came out to celebrate the 85th annual cottonwood mother's day rodeo.

Action news now reporter karen alvarez is live in redding, leading us off, karen, you were there - what did you see?

Scott---for the most part--- people were ignoring that social distancing.

Take a look this is the sign posted outside the rodeo grounds---before entering---asking people to practice safety precuations--- in a statement earlier this week---public health said they advised the organizer---jeff davis--- to cancel or postpone the event--- yesterday, i spoke with shasta county sheriff's department and they told me they were not going to enforce the stay-at-home order.

The rodeo still went on as planned---people coming out for different reasons> everyone we had scheduled this year has been cancelled and we want to go out.

My wife wanted to go out, so her wish is my command, we're here..

<if they want to come out here and do their own thing, they should have every right to with no reprucussions.

If people want to come out and risk their health, that's fine with me.

Throughout the rodeogrounds--- there were multiple handwashing stations, people brought their own alcohol--- and there were multiple food trucks---as well with rodeo events going on as planned live in redding, karen alvarez, action news now, coverage you can count on.

The rodeo took place at the bobby jones arena in cottonwood.

As of right now there are 18 cases in butte county and 17 recoveries.

Shasta county has 31 confirmed cases with 4 deaths.

Tehama county has 1 confirmed case and one death..

Here are loacal test numbers too.

Glenn county has 6 cases with 5 recoveries..

And modoc and lassen have zero cases -- and we'll get to some more of our local numbers in just a bit.### mask makers are getting creative during the stay- at-home order& in chico - "the center for spiritual living" sold masks today.

It went so well, they sold out!

Cars were lined up (pointing) earlier today receiving their handmade masks.

At "hi happy mothers day" amy roberts is the president at the center for spiritual living..

"my mother was a quilter and she passed away several years ago and i have a garage full of fabric, beautiful fabric, and i knew that this is what she would want it to be used for," julie fisher is the hands behind making the "made with love face mask."

Fisher says what better way to spend mothers day than giving back..

Sot julie fisherã mask maker "we have a tradition of giving back," fisher says they are having a drive-thru at the center for spiritual living to sell the made with love masks for $5 each& nat "thank youã (handing each other money) and all the proceedings will be donated to the center.

Roberts says the center has 150 members that are no longer able to get together on sundays..

Nat "hi wendy" "we want our community to still be able to go out into the public safely," fisher tells us why the home- made mask are reusable and recyclable.

Nat "oh i like that one" sot julie fisher- mask maker and member of the center for spiritual living "the reason theyre reversible is- theyre 100% cotton, machine washable, and if you make them reversible then youll know which side youre wearing near your mouth because they don't have the filter that is just plain white," fisher says she made a total of 60 masks but only brought 45 today.

Roberts says in the fall they will be amping up to sell more mask during regular flu season.

Roberts tells me they will be selling "made with love face mask" again by drive-thru next saturday from 11 -2 pm.

Richard and chris garcia are the owners of red tavern in chico - they started preparing yesterday.

Red tavern is open for curbside and delivery everyday but today they opened for brunch.

The garcias' say customers started placing their order for mothers day last wednesday - and some items were sold out by noon.

"we keep a tally sheet of how many we have left of each item, and then well just let them know were sold out of that one but we still have some of this one left," "well all get through this together, we appreciate everyones response, we have amazing customers, and i think we made new customers during this time," the garcia's say they had to lay off some employees but have slowly brought back 70 percent of their staff.

They hope to open their patio section soon.

Norm's restaurant in palo cedro is also serving up sunday brunch for mom's to enjoy on their special day... we're a little bit more busy, we stocked up on the pastries that we made today.

We have extra extra cinabom rolls, and sticky buns, and carrot cakes, and all kinds of fun stuff.

Now---the restaurant says this is one of their busiest days---all meals were to-go, but they did have patio seating for those who wanted to dine-in.

Now looking at our national coronavirus numbers... there are over 4 million confirmed cases worldwide with over 279 thousand deaths... nationwide there are over 1.3 million cases and 78,794 deaths.

And in california there are 66,558 cases and 2,687 deaths.

Governor newsom sent a letter to three counties warning them that they could lose disaster funding if they continue to defy his stay- at-home order.

Officials in yuba, sutter and modoc counties have allowed businesses to reopen.

A spokesman for yuba and sutter counties said local leaders are working to do what is best for the overall health of their communities.## the chico mall will be reopening its doors next week, on wednesday, may 13.

A spokesperson from the mall says they are re- naming the mall to the "chico marketplace."

New stores are also on the way... tenants include homegoods,*h and * as well as planet fitness.

Tenative hours for the reopening will be 11 a-m to 7 p-m monday through saturday and 11 a-m to 6 p-m on sunday.

Hundreds of residents in north chico spent a good part of their 'mother's day' without power.

The power went out about noon..

And was out in some areas up to three hours..

A pg&e worker told action news now some 'mylar foil balloons' came in contact with the powerlines at garner lane and porchlight court..

The contact sparked a small fire..

And neighbors quickly worked together..

Lori mc-dermott lives off garner..

And said they used their hoses and shovels and got to work to put out the fire.

15-hundred pg&e customers north of eaton road to the keefer road area lost power..

Most of the power was restored by 3pm.

### a quick-thinking off-duty officer helped save a 24- year-old california hiker trapped in a whirlpool.

It happened yesterday - the hiker was trying to cross angel falls when he became trapped in the fast- moving spring water.

An off-duty officer - was hiking nearby -- he used a strap from his backpack and tied it around a branch so the hiker could grab it.

He then threw the branch to the man and talked him through the rescue.

We are seeing some high clouds over the region out head of our next system and temperatures are running about 5 to 15 degrees cooler than yesterday this time due to onshore flow and falling heights.

Quiet and dry conditions continue for today but our weather will become more active tomorrow as an upper level trough begins to push into norcal.

Mid level clouds will increase overnight and tomorrow morning and a cold front will push into western portions of the area around 11 am.

Widespread showers are expected along and just ahead of the front as it makes its way across norcal into the evening.

Showers will become less numerous monday night but a short wave trough will bring the return of widespread showers mainly from marysville north on tuesday.

Tuesday afternoon could bring a chance of isolated thunderstorms, mainly to the northern sacramento valley and associated foothills tuesday afternoon and evening.

Rain totals through tuesday are looking to be up to 0.50" in the far northern sac valley to minimal accumulation in the northern san joaquin valley and 0.50" to 1.00" in the mountains north of highway 50 with locally higher amounts over the shasta county mountains.

For wednesday to saturday - precipitation chances continue wednesday and thursday as an upper low off the pacific nw coast is slow to move out.

Mainly dry conditions expected south of sacramento, although cloudy skies and below normal temperatures will be seen.

Highs will be roughly 5-10 degrees below average for early may.

Brief period of dry and warmer weather is seen late week into the weekend before another potential system impacts the area late weekend into early the following week.

With unemployment near 15 percent... people are looking for ways to feed themselves and their families.

A grocery store in maryland hosted a giveaway to help.

So many people showed up for it ... police had to direct traffic.

Owner pedro castaneda says he appreciates customers' efforts to observe social distancing after some giveaways have been overcrowded.

Katie kyros/reporting: "one of the ways that savemart made sure they could manage this line was to pre-register the customers and have them stay in their cars so they could maintain social distancing as they drove up to get their free groceries."

Tony clarke/customer: "i think, once this, once this is over or close to being over, everything's going to be back to normal or close to it.

I really believe that."

150 customers lined up for the bags.

Many affected by the high job losses -- at levels not seen since the great depression.

Tony clarke/customer: "i'm currently out of work right now, and i'm hoping that with this all this 30 million people out of work and 1.1 in this area, that we can get back to work to what life used to be."

A number of local businesses chipped in for the giveaway.
