SOU event sparks controversy

Alicia now joins us live and she shares why this event was organized and why an organizer says it's meant to inform.

The event is called "why i left antifa" and it includes an address from a former antifa member and then a time for q&a.

When i spoke with one of the organizers and president of "college republicans" he said h doesn't see this event becoming hateful.

Gabriel says: "the purpose of this event is i think it's really important to have a dialogue about issues and coincidentally it seems to be more of an issue now than it was when we started planning this" the main point of controversy seems to be about the speaker, the leadership institute's student rights advocate and former member of antifa.

Gabriel says: "we a lot of people you know are republican or with conservative leanings have always had this opposition to antifa because of their tactics in their approach to civil discourse so that is why we did it and it's just such a coincidence that now it's deemed a domestic terror organization" to provide some background -- the antifa organization has come up recently because of the recent protests.

President trump plans to designate 'antifa' as a terrorist organization.

Gabriel says: "this person has been a part of antifa so we under he understands the reason for why people want to be a part of it i don't see why he would say anything that's necessarily hateful but again you know that would be his prerogative and if he says something that i disagree with i'm fine with calling that out" the event will be through zoom and it's open to the public.

Gabriel says: "it'll be interesting to hear his perspective and also afterwards there's going to be a q&a so if people wanna ask questions they're welcome to" gabriel, who you just heard from, said he believes there is more reason to have this event now than when it was first being planned because of recent protests and riots that have been happening in cities around the nation.
