While the country has been struggling to battle COVID-19, the National Mission for Clean Ganga has been busy for more than a month in raising another awakening among people especially among children about Ganga, Rivers and Environment- Ganga Quest-2020- an innovative quiz that has been live now for more than a month.
The quiz has received unprecedented response and crossed a million mark, with more than 11 lakh participants registering well before its scheduled end on May 30, 2020.
The quiz has been innovatively conceptualized and designed in partnership with TREE Craze Foundation, a not for profit organisation of young professionals, which has recently been in news for their efforts on the Yamuna Cleaning regularly at Kalindi Kunj ghat.
RR Mishra, Director General, NMCG agrees that conducting the quiz during the Corona epidemic has been a major step but the Mission decided to go ahead to engage and to some extent entertain the children confined to their homes due to a series of lockdowns.
In feedback shared with NMCG, many participants acknowledged the positive effect the contest had on children.
Gangaquest 2020 also drew tremendous support from many luminaries, with the Minister of Jalshakti Gajendra Singh Shekhawat actively leading the campaign with his message and interaction with community-level structures within Namami Gange such as Ganga Vichar Manch, NYK Ganga Doots and Ganga Praharis and promotions along with Kailash Kher, Rajiv Khandelwal, Trichur Brothers, Temsutula Imsong amongst others.
Deepa Joseph from Kozhikode who used to work as bus driver at a college has started driving ambulance after colleges were shut in view of COVID19. She said, "I took this job as I was facing financial crisis. Not many jobs are available due to the pandemic."
Former Chief Minister of Bihar, Lalu Prasad Yadav has been shifted to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) director's bungalow on Wednesday (Aug 05) in view of his clinical safety arising from the spurt in Covid-19 infection. RIMS had written to Birsa Munda Jail authority seeking his shifting as ward where he was receiving treatment was converted into COVID ward.The total number of 8,648 active cases has been recorded so far in Jharkhand till Wednesday evening. Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, is serving a jail term after being convicted in the fodder scam cases and was admitted to the RIMS with kidney problem.

"MHA jumped into this matter as their political leaders told them they may get trapped as SOG Rajasthan has evidence and audio clip is authentic. Nation knows CM's honesty. He had said if audio is proven to be false, he'll retire from politics. After this, Gajendra Singh, Gulab Chand Kataria, Satish Poonia, Rajendra Rathore declared the audio to be false. Can they give a statement like CM? Narendra Modi and Amit Shah should come to the front, they should say if they will resign. The CM has said clearly," said Khachariyawas.
Congress leader, Ajay Maken on 'phone tapping' in Rajasthan demanded the resignation or removal of Ganjendra Singh Shekhawat. He said, "Now that Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has been named in the FIR and his voice recognised in the audiotape, why is holding the post of Union Minister? Congress demands that either he resigns or he is removed so that he can't influence the probe. I heard that he is saying that the voice in the audiotape is not his, but of another Gajendra Singh. If it is so, he should give his voice sample and step down from the post until the probe is completed," added Maken.
Devotees took holy dip in River Ganga on the third Monday of pious month of 'Sawan'. 'Sawan' is considered as one of the holiest auspicious months in the Hindu religion and it is dedicated to worship Lord Shiva. During this month, devotees of Shiva observed fast to seek his blessings.
Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh launched the restructured Prime Minister's Awards for Excellence in Public Administration 2020 scheme and web portal on July 17. In the first meeting of the National Ganga Council on December 14, 2019, at Kanpur under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it was decided to create a "Good performance for Ganga Rejuvenation" award for the Ganga districts under this scheme. While addressing the meeting, Dr. Jitendra Singh said that the Mantra of "Maximum Governance, Minimum Government" is incomplete without citizen participation and citizen centricity. Rajiv Ranjan Mishra, Director General of the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) has also reached out to the Chief Secretaries of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. The award has been scheduled to be distributed on the occasion of Rashtriya Ekta Diwas on October 31st, 2020
The World Bank and the Government of India on July 07 signed a loan agreement to enhance support for the Namami Gange Programme that seeks to rejuvenate the Ganga River. The USD 400 million operation comprises a loan of USD381 million and a proposed guarantee of up to USD 19 million. The agreement was signed between Sameer Kumar Khare, Additional Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance on behalf of the Government of India and Qaiser Khan, Acting Country Director (India), on behalf of the World Bank. The guarantee instrument will be processed separately. The Second National Ganga River Basin Project will help stem pollution in the iconic river and strengthen the management of the river basin, which is home to more than 500 million people. Under the Namami Gange Programme, 313 projects have been sanctioned till March 2020 at a total cost of Rs 28,966 crore in different sectors. The National Ganga River Basin Project (NGRBP) is an important component of Namami Gange. A World Bank-funded National Ganga River Basin Project (Ganga -I) for an amount of USD600 million (Rs 4,535 crore) is currently ongoing and is approved up to December 31, 2021 for funding infrastructure projects of pollution abatement in the river Ganga. The loan would be for a period of five years up to December 2026. The World Bank has been supporting the government's efforts since 2011 through the ongoing National Ganga River Basin Project. The USD400 million operation includes a proposed guarantee of up to USD19 million to backstop the government's payment obligations for three Hybrid-Annuity-Model Public-Private Partnership (HAM-PPP) investments on the Ganga's tributaries.
