The freeway was shut down twice

News at 11" tonight was the 12th day of consecutive protests in the eugene--springfield area for the black lives matter movement.

Thank you for joining us, i'm chynna greene.

Kezi nine news reporter connor mccarthy followed the protests all night and...tonight they did something new... shut down a major freeway in eugene.

Connor: "over 200 protesters marched from the valley river center to the downtown are and back, chanting disrupt not destruct.

And the way that they disprupted today was they took over the freeway right here behind me nat: black lives matter.

Marching down delta highway and then on to i-105... protesters demanded police reform and the end to systemic racism.

Traffic was stopped in both directions for two hours as demonstrators peeacfully voiced their message.

A message of unity... tolerance... and equity.

Today's protest was organizerd by a new group called black unity.

They are pushing for a more organized front to create change.

Tyler hendry is a leadre for a group called eugene stand up that formed over the last week... and he says joining forces only gives them strength to create change.

Tyler: "what eugene stand up is trying to do is to push a peaceful message and let people know were trying to give back to the community, trying to change the community and trying to use strength in numbers to get out voices heard."

Protesters made their way downtown... listened to speeches... and marched on the west bound lanes of i-105.

Disrupting the freeway in the name of change and peace.

Connor: "the march ended shortly after 8:30 this evening with protesters walking back here to the valley river center.

The whole time the protest was peaceful.
