Thank you for joining us - covid - 19 has forced many small businesses in mississippi to shut their doors, at least temporarily..

And that has caused financial hardships for owners and employees, but there could be some help on the horizon.

Wcbi's bobby martinez is live in downtown starkville with more on a non- profit organization.

Joey, downtown starkville is a prime location full of small businesses that play a major part in the city's economy.

And for some..

Covid-19 set them back..

Ms 30 day fund is a non profit organization that is aimed to help any small business in the state get back on their feet..

"mississippians are best when we help each other."

They're the heart of our downtown districts.

Main streets lined up with our favorite stops.

Mostly all locally owned and small businesses.

Sot - brian sanderson - founder - ms30dayfund "mississippi the impact of our economy is really made up of small businesses."

The vision first took off in virginia.

And after seeing success there..

Marie sanderson says they decided to give it a try in mississippi.

Sot - marie sanderson - founder - ms30dayfund - "we feel like if there's any state ready to help each other it's the mississippians so we set it up here."

Brian sanderson says the ms30dayfund is a forgivable loan that can provide small businesses up to 3-thousand dollars.

And while businesses are not asked to pay back the money.

He does hope they pay it forward.

"it's not a repayment schedule but we ask them to pay forward to other small businesses that are in need once they are back up on their feet."

So how do you know if you're eligible?

Sot - marie sanderson - founder - ms30dayfund - "the application process is very clear on a few things.

You have to be a mississippi business.

You have to be a mississippi resident.

Your business has to have been around for a year."

The organization just recently and so far, brian says hundreds of small businesses have applied.

"we had a lot of applications already and we are focusing on continuing to get the word out and get as many contributions in the doors we can that can help small businesses."

Chris collins works at liberty bell barbershop in starkville..he says many small businesses are in a huge hole and the ms30dayfund, might be the ticket to help pull them out.

"i think that's great.

A small town like this that is very community oriented especially the downtown area where there are multiple businesses that were shut down for periods of time and stuff like that.

I think someone being able to step up and do something like that can only benefit for people around here."

And to learn more on how you can apply..

Across the state and country, organizers at justice rallies have also been using the events to encourage people to vote.

Especially the younger generation... our savannah gaido joins us live in the studio with more on how young voters are getting involved.

Many of those who have been taking to the streets calling for unity haven't been able to make their voices heard where it really counts - at the ballot box now they are hoping their numbers in the street turn into lines at the polls..

"the only way that things are going to change by law or state statute is going to be through your power of voting."

"thats the most important thing that i tell my friends, if you are not registered to vote please register to vote and use that voice when you have it."

Those are the words of young voters -- who now have the opportunity to bring about the change they want to see.

And one thing they want to see is a new mississippi state flag.

"there is a huge group of us that are now of age who haven't been able to have a say as far as the flag goes.

And i believe that we should be able to use that right if enough people believe it should change, it should change, and vice versa.

As long as there is the abilitbity to make our opinions and thoughts on the issue heard."

Mississippi's flag is the last in the nation to contain a confederate symbol// and these young voters say it's time to change that..

"people need to understand that changing the flag is not going to change history, history is history.

It just makes mississippi more welcoming and more inclusive to the next generation that are going to come after us versus the generation that made the flag and what were known for now.

I feel like my generation specifically is very keen on improving the reputation of mississippi as a whole."

The mississippi secretary of state's office reports just over five thousand new voters have registered since may 10th.

If someone registered to vote at a rally this past weekend, that most likely has not been processed.

It could be the end of the month before those numbers are in.

Stinger tupelo's police athletic league takes its basketball league to the streets.

We'll have that story coming up on wcbi news.

A summer program organized by the tupelo police department is making its way to neighborhoods across the city.

For years the tupelo police athletic league has held summer basketball camps at its headquarters, but this summer, pal is going mobile.

Nats milton moore is taking young people through the fundamentals of basketball.

Moore retied as head coach at rust college and now shares his skills and knowledge as a volunteer coach with the tupelo police athletic league.

"they get a chance to talk to the police and communicate, and talk and get to know each other, that's the main thing."

Lieutenant katarsha white is executive director of pal and oversees tpd's community oriented policing.

She says the decision was made to take the basketball camps to different neighborhoods because of concerns over covid 19, and it helps raise awareness of programs offered by the police athletic league.

Lieutenant white says building those relations between the community and police has always been important, but is critical during this time.

"we want people to take the opportunity to talk with us, if you see an officer, wave at them, let him know if you have something you want to say, let him know what your concerns are, especially in your community, it takes us to make sure our communities are safe, not just law enforcement, but the people in those communities."

Those taking part in the pal mobile camp say they appreciate the lessons and the officers.

"if it weren't for police we really wouldn't be protected as much, they are putting their life on the line for us and coming out here , nice people."

The pal mobile basketball camp will be at gumtree park friday at noon, it will visit other neighborhoods throughout the summer.
