Both sides said meeting went well and police say they are willing to work with the NAACP

Straight ahead.... members of the lee county naacp met with the tupelo police chief and other officers at the police department.

It was about getting an understanding for the procedures the police department uses to deal with bad officers.

Wtva's wayne hereford interviewed the head of the naacp as well as the police chief.

He joins us live in tupelo with what came out of the meeting.

The meeting lasted for about an hour here at the police station earlier today.

In addition to discussing grievance procedures naacp leaders and the chief of police agreed to come up with a plan to recruit more black police officers and form a citizens' police academy for black residents.

That's just part of what lee county naacp president rev.

Chris traylor says came out of the meeting this morning.

Traylor says it comes on the heels of the george floyd case in minnesota where a man died while being subdued by police.

Traylor says that tupelo police chief bart aguirre agreed to show them police policies for dealing with potential police brutality, as well as as well as to work out a plan for other concerns.

"but we are having a meeting with our city council to review some of our policy procedures to see if there needs to be some updates or any changes that need to be.

But we don't want to be too quick about handing out this stuff before there are any corrections that are made."

Chief aguirre did not give a timetable for when these changes would be made but he says the meeting was agreeable and that his department is willing to work with the naacp.
