Elderly woman fashions cardboard coronavirus shield

Ever since the coronavirus reached Cuba, a tall cardboard box with arms and legs can be seen tottering around a Havana suburb.

Underneath it is Feridia Rojas, 82, who decided to build and wear mobile housing to shield herself from the virus that is particularly deadly to seniors, in a country where personal protective equipment is not sold at stores.

I use it to run errands that are a little further away, and I feel protected by it, which is why I use it.

"I was afraid of the asymptomatic cases, that they would cough at the moment I passed by.

"So I thought : I'll do a little house with a cardboard box and wear it." The witty slogans on her box have caught the attention of locals who are impressed with her invention (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) LOCAL RESIDENT, ZOE DE LA FUENTE, SAYING: "I'm going to get a cardboard box house.

I'm gonna get two boxes right now.

It's spectacular, you're at home and you're protected.

Very nice, very good.

People are coming up with new things."
