Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton signed an executive order mandating that face masks be worn in businesses within Tupelo City Limits.

1 case to 184... pickens county, up by 10 cases to 188.

And lamar county, up by 1 to 63.

Masks will be mandatory in the city of tupelo.

Just minutes ago, mayor jason shelton signed an executive order that mandates masks in businesses inside the city limits.

Wtva's bronson woodruff joins us now live from city hall to tell us when this will go into effect.

The order will take effect monday at 6 am.

According to the order, the purpose is to encourage voluntary compliance in wearing masks in businesses and indoor public places.

The order will require businesses to post signs requiring masks.

It also asks business owners to ask people to leave if they aren't wearing a face covering.

Shelton said the city's coronavirus cases nearly doubled in number from about six hundred last week to over a thousand now.

He said it is time to take more action.

"we thought that following the cdc guidelines, the recommendations of the experts , the recommendation of north mississippi medical center, that it would be prudent to issue an executive order to mandate the wearing of masks here in the city of tupelo."

There are some exceptions to the mandate.

Those include medical conditions, religious reasons and children under the age of twelve.
