Mcgrath wins, more analysis

C1 3 election day... part two.

And i'm veronica jean seltzer.

All day long the results have been coming in for last tuesday's election.

You can see results running at the bottom of your screen.

And with those votes finally tallied... we now know who will face off against senator mitch mcconnell in november.

Mcgrath received 45-percent of the vote.... booker.... almost 43-percent.

Abc 36's christy bollinger has been in frankfort monitoring results for us all day.

She's in the studio tonight with more on this down-to- the-wire race.

Polls for the democratic senate race have flipped back and forth between progressive candidate charles booker and former marine pilot amy mcgrath.

When unofficial numbers started coming in...the highly-watched race seemed neck-and- neck.

Mcgrath..winning a lot of smaller counties..

.but booker won the state's two largest counties..

Jefferson and fayette.

Analysts wondered if his late surge in popularity would hurt him with so many people voting absentee this year.

He did do well based on in-person voting...but as absentee results came in... it wasn't enough to put him on top.

So the big showdown in the fall..

Will be between mcgrath and long-time incumbent... senate majority leader mitch mcconnell..

In his bid for a seventh term.

Mcconnell's campaign released a statement...saying mcgrath is lucky to have gotten the victory.

It reads in part... "it's clear this self-proclaimed most liberal person in kentucky who supports government-run health care and abortion even in the ninth month does not represent kentucky values."

Mcgrath also sent a statement about her victory.... "i'm humbled that kentucky democrats have nominated me to take on mitch mcconnell in the general election and can't wait to get started in sending him into retirement and finally draining the toxic washington political swamp that he built."

Booker hasn't conceded the race yet.

We've called, texted, and left messages...but haven't heard from him about the race.

Most people thought mcgrath facing off against mcconnell in the november election was a forgone conclusion... until booker's surge.

L3: election 2020 white mitch mcconnell wins republican senate primary mcconnell easily won the republican primary for u.s. senate.... with around 83-percent of the votes.

He assumed office in 19-85 and was selected senate majority leader in 20-14.

- 368,426 votes ..

- 87 ... like mcconnell... president donald trump and joe biden were declared the winners of their races after in- person and some absentee ballots were counted last week.

With all the results in president trump had 87 percent of the votes for the republican presidential primary.... and joe biden had 68-percent for the democratic presidential primary.

Turning now to the u-s house races.

There are seven contested primary races for seats in the u.s. house.

Guthrie will take on democrat hank linderman in november.

3 - gop mike craven ..

19,676 (42%) rhonda palazzo ..

19,806 (42%) waym ... in the race for district three.... it was a very tight race between mike craven and rhonda palazzo... with palazzo winning by only 130 votes.

She will challenge democratic incumbent john yarmuth who has serve in the house for 13 years.

4 mcmurtry - primary.jpg waymen eddings - primary.jpg <none> in the u.s. district four republican primary.... thomas massie easily won over challenger todd mcmurtry.

This race was another one that had national interest.

Mcmurtry was backed by president trump.... who lambasted massie and called for him to be thrown out of the republican party after he held up a $2 trillion coronavirus relief bill in march.

4 - dem alexandra owensby ..

40,646 (58%) shannon fabert ..

29,006 (42%) ... massie's challenger in the november general election will be alexandra owensby.... who won against shannon fabert in the district 4 democratic race... with 58-percent of the vote.

5 primary.jpg waymen eddings - primary.jpg <none> in u.s. house district five.... republican incumbent hal rogers won by a large majority over his opponent gerardo serrano.

Roger's challenger in the upcoming general election will be democrat matthew ryan best.

6 - gop andy barr ..

61,874 (91%) geoffrey young ..

2,742 (4%) chuck ed ... in the u.s house district six g-o-p primary... incumbent andy barr won the nomination with more than 90- percent of the votes.

Of course barr... still grieving the sudden loss of his 39-year-old wife carol... who died june 16th of natural causes.

They have two young daughters.

6 primary.jpg chuck eddy - primary.jpg <none> barr's challenger on the democratic side will be josh hicks... after he beat out daniel kemph with 72 percent of the vote.

We move on now to the state senate races... where there are 19 seats out of 38 that are up for election this year.

Katie howard: 3,157 (27%) ... in state senate district seven... adrienne southworth won out over four other opponents for the republican nomination.

Kay hensley: 4,756 (27%) ... in the race for senate seat in district 21... the republican winner is incumbert albert robinson.... with 35 percent of the votes.

Karen berg ... in district 26.... a special election was held for the kentucky state senate after ernie harris retired in april.
