Some ISU students are demanding change to the school's racial culture

Some indiana state university students are fighting for change regarding the school's racial climate.

We told you at 5 o'clock about a petition some students created to demand just that.

News 10's richard solomon spoke with university leaders and concerned students.

He has more on this matter.

" some isu students say they're hoping this petition creates change at the university.

Isu's director of communications sent me an e-mail that was sent to students.

One student i spoke with says it isn't enough.

Nijah smith is a senior at indiana state university.

And for her..she says she doesn't feel the school fully supports it's black students.

"the disregard that america has for black life over these past hundreds of years..it effects me."

Smith says she's talked with numerous students who've faced micro and macroaggressions in the classroom and working on campus.

So to demand change ..this petition was created.

Smith..along with numerous black student organizations...are asking for signatures.

"indiana state prides itself in diversity, if we love diversity as much as we say we do everyone on this campus should feel safe."

Smith says some students want to change the racial climate of the university.

Smith says that starts with the educators..

"hiring more black faculty, we ask for more psychiatrists of color we ask for community policing on campus so that we know who our police officers are " i reached out to isu's director of communications.

He sent me an email that was sent to students..

A part of that email says qoute: a time where change is inevitable and necessary.

That process at isu that action has already begun in numerous areas.

But smith says she wants visible actions put behind these words.

"when it came to covid they figured it ou tquickly and got stuff done black students spend their money to go there we should be just as important" isu's director of communications did send me an email in regards to the petition from dr. curtis.

The email expresses how the university would have a meeting with concerned students.

University leaders say the student voice must be heard.
