Nepal struggles with increases Covid-19 cases

Recovery rate of Nepal's COVID-19 infected patients stood at around 56 percent in an early fortnight of August, while towards the end of the month, it has dipped down to 54, increasing worries and panic for health workers and government. Fatalities attributed to deadly virus crossed 100 mark in mid-August. As month marches to end, it doubled with 14 deaths on Sunday taking the number to 221. It was the month of (mid) May, the Himalayan Nation, buffered in between India and China had recorded its first fatality due to Corona Virus. Nepal recorded a single-day rise of 1221 cases with 14 more fatalities to deadly virus taking toll of infected to 38,561 while a number of recovered ones stands at 20, 822. Till Sunday, a total of 144 Corona infected patients are kept in the Intensive Care Unit whereas 17 are in ventilator throughout the nation. Though some patients underwent Plasma Therapy, 20 of them only have recovered fully till last week, the Health Ministry data showed. With the swift rise in COVID-19 cases, doctors along with other medical workers working on the frontline of the pandemic are facing increased pressure. More than 50 doctors were reported to be infected while working on the front line treating patients whose coronavirus test was not done before being admitted or brought to the hospital. Falling short of beds for COVID-19 infected patients with a decreased rate of recovery, the Government under the leadership of KP Sharma Oli has added up beds in hospitals around nation. In the month of January, Nepal was the first nation in South Asia to confirm the infection in a Wuhan returnee Nepali citizen.

A group of people demonstrated in front of Chinese Embassy in Nepal's capital city Kathmandu on September 23 against recent land encroachment by China. Demonstrators held placards and banners reading 'Back off China' message after Nepali land was encroached to construct 9 infrastructures in Lapcha Bagar area of Nepal's Humla District. Chief District Officer Chiranjibi Giri have toured the area earlier on Wednesday where he was sent back by Chinese forces claiming it to be their land and building were constructed on their land. Soon after discovering about illegal construction of infrastructures in Nepali land by Chinese side, it has been reported that pillar number 11 in the area is now not traceable. The Chinese side has built buildings at a distance of around two kilometers from border in Lapcha Limi area of Humla District. China in the recent years has been carrying out construction works near the border with Nepal for several years. While the Government of Nepal has remained mum over the issue, the Chinese Mission in Nepal has issued a release claiming the building are built in their side instead asking Nepali authorities to verify the border points. "The buildings mentioned in the media have been verified to be on the Chinese side of the China-Nepal border. The Nepali side may make verification again," Chinese Embassy spokesperson said today. Area now encroached by China is also said to offer view of Kailash Mansarovar which lies in the Tiber Autonomous Region.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday held a meeting with several leading members of film fraternity. The virtual meeting was over the UP CM's proposal of a new film city in the state. In his address, CM Yogi stressed on what makes the state the 'cultural centre' of the country. He pointed out that UP shares borders with seven states and a neighbouring country (Nepal). CM Yogi added that the new film city will come up near the site of the historical city of Hastinapur. Singers Udit Narayan, Kailash Kher, Anup Jalota were present at the meeting. Several other dignitaries including Anupam Kher, Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri took part virtually in the meeting. The film city was proposed by Yogi last week and 1000 acres of land have been identified for the project. The film city is likely to come up in the state's Gautam Buddh Nagar district. Incidentally, the district already boasts of a film city, located at Sector 16 A in Noida.
