New Hope Middle teacher is keeping her ancestors memories alive in future generations through the Holocaust Project.

No stranger to our viewers at news 12 now.

She was a recent golden apple recipient, and a finalist during our 2019-2020 school year.

One of her passions, other than her family and students is the holocaust project that is located in the hallway of new hope middle school.

The holocaust project is part of a year long study honoring those who perished.

We take a look, during this evenings, "what's right with our schools."

Rachel: the holocaust project was something that i wanted to start a couple of years ago.

My father is a holocaust survivor.

And we teach as a six grade standard in georgia, we teach the holocaust.

And i wanted something to penetrate.

It's easy to learn about something that happened far away.

Rodney: she is willing to do the hard work and give her students those relevant authentic experiences that are going to be life-changing.

She did the holocaust project as something that's going to be something that's going to stay with them for a very long time.

Rachel: there is a museum in washington, the children's holocaust museum and they have taken over 3000 tiles and they've permanently i fix them from children all over the country.

About what the holocaust means after they've studied.

I thought this would be a great idea.

And so instead of ceramic, we have like a cardboard on canvas, or canvas on cardboard.

And the students have to write about it and they have many months of a long study about the holocaust.

But it's not just about the holocaust it's about racism.

It's about history.

It's about culture.

It's about learning, about inclusion.

And celebrating differences.

We are able to encompass all of these things when we talk about the holocaust.

We talk about the 6 million jews that perished.

We talk about the 11 million who perished as well.

The types of individuals which could've been anyone.

We are required to teach our children and our children's children.

And to me i'll take that as a commandment almost.

That it's my duty to make sure that no one forgets.
