COVID-19: Parts of country observes movement restriction

Some cities of the country are witnessing weekend lockdowns and brief shutdowns in view of rising cases of coronavirus.

Streets in Chennai on August 02 wore a deserted look as the state observes lockdown till August 31.

Started from July 25, Bhopal is observing 10-day complete lockdown.

People remained indoors and shops were closed ahead of Raksha Bandhan.

Jammu and Kashmir government has extended the COVID-19 lockdown guidelines till August 5.

The Union territory on August 02 recorded 613 COVID-19 cases and 11 deaths taking the toll of total cases to 20, 972.

Several areas in Madhya Pradesh have been hit by floods due to heavy downpour. The Indian Air Force deployed choppers to airlift people from flood-hit Chhindwara in MP. IAF personnel were seen rappelling from an Mi-17 chopper for rescue. Over 9,000 people have been moved to relief camps in MP so far. A similar heroic rescue was carried out in n MP's Balaghat. 2 youths and an elderly person were rescued by IAF personnel. Even Madhya Pradesh's capital Bhopal struggled amid heavy rain. Over 125 people have died in MP due to rain & flood in MP this monsoon. MP CM Shivraj Chouhan commented on the situation. He said, โ€œThis morning, I briefed the Prime Minister regarding the current situation. We are receiving his loving support and blessings. I am happy that rescue operations were conducted throughout the night. All 5 people in Sehore's Narela were rescued at 2:30 at night. Shajapur, Devas... There are some problems but there is no need to worry because our personnel of SDRF are deployed. Wherever needed, we'll take the Army's help. We won't allow loss of life in any part of the state. My appeal is that people shouldn't be stubborn when the administration tries to evacuate them.โ€

A hospital in Chennai successfully treated an extremely critical COVID-19 positive pregnant woman who delivered her baby prematurely at 28 weeks. The doctors performed an emergency C-section to save the lives of both the mother and the baby. "The baby was delivered in 28th week of pregnancy. Its lungs were not fully formed and had contracted an infection," a doctor said. Both mother and the baby are fine and stable now.

Air India Express employees paid tribute to fallen co-pilot Akhilesh Kumar in Delhi. Akhilesh lost his life with 17 others in Kozhikode plane crash. The body of the deceased was brought to Delhi from Kochi. Around 200 AI Express employees paid tribute to the fallen co-pilot. "Our last conversation with him was on Rakshabandhan. We connected over a video call. We were supposed to meet on around August 15-16," said Akhilesh Kumar's Brother-in-law, Vijay. Akhilesh's mortal remains were taken to his native place in Uttar Pradesh's Mathura. "Wife and mother of the pilot are unwell. We set up a medical team and got checkups done," said Dr Bhudev, District Hospital, Mathura. An AI Express plane overshot the runway on August 7. The aircraft fell into a valley where it split into two pieces. At least 18 people, including the pilots, were killed. There were 190 people onboard the Vande Bharat flight. The flight was bringing back Indians stranded in Dubai due to Covid-19 pandemic.
