Rome nursing home patient turns to social media to get heard during coronavirus pandemic

: A patient at the Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing facility in Rome was so upset with her care that she turned to social media to get people's attention.

This week to fight for the rights of nursing home patients.

This, after her mother, who is a patient at a rome nursing home, posted a video on social media describing the conditions she says she's forced to live in.

That nursing home patient says she's worried for herself and others in all nursing homes right now...since family members aren't allowed to go in and see the conditions for themselves...becaus e of covid.

News channel two's gary liberatore has this exclusive story for us tonight.

Inside one of the rooms at the grand rehabilitation and nursing facility in rome...sits 63-year- old raejean wallace...she's about to turn 64... (ruth wallace, daughter) .

None .

None tc : 18:11 "my mother will be 64 on august 13 so if anyone would like to send her a birthday card, i would love that&" ruth wallace says her mother had surgery three years ago... tc : 14:52 "she has a coli tube, it's a tube that my mom had placed in her stomach about three years ago so it drains out, my mother has infection in between her liver and her gall bladder so it drains out into that bag.

There's only certain facilities, because it can get that infected very easily there's only certain facilities that has that."

And the closest facility to her hometown of oswego that had such a bed when she was having health issues last year...was the grand rehabiliation and nursing in rome.

Tc : "hi this is raejean wallace.

I just want to talk to you.

Instead of me writing up something i wanna talk to you in person."

Wallace has been at the grand in rome since august 16th of last year...it's an anniversary date she is not looking forward to.... tc : 00:29 "so i didn't get washed up tonight.

I asked to see someone about my foot because it's hurting really bad..."

This is what raejean's leg...looked like friday night when she made this video.

"...and that was at 7 o'clock tonight.

So the supervisor was coming in tonight she never came in.

So then they said the other supervisor was going to come in.

Here it is after midnight go on to 1230 at night i have still not seen anybody.

To look at my foot 0:51."

She posted this video early friday morning...and it now has more than 30,000 views... tc : 10:23 "my mother quite possibly is going to lose the toe next to her big toe because of black meat, not being treated not being cared for not being washed, bed bath don't exist anymore, it's called a wash up.

Will wash your back in your arms."

In the video wallace talks about other examples of neglect...and she says staff members do not wear masks at all times, something that really upsets her because she was diagnosed with covid in march...sent to rome hospital for three weeks before returning to the grand.

Tc : 00:15 "and how did that video get started but she told to do that by someone in the family or was it just her idea?

My mom has had a rough stay there and i think she just got to the point where she didn't know what else to do."

I called the grand to get their comments on the video....and was told by a supervisor that she could not comment and hung up on me.

I called back immediately just to leave my number and was told to call back on monday.

I also called the company spokesperson out of new york but did not get a call back.

I did get a response from the state health department after i shared raejean wallace's video.

Spokesperson jill montag says quote..."the safety and wellbeing of nursing home residents is of paramount importance to the department of health.

The department has received these allegations.

As they focus on individual residents and health conditions, we will refrain from further comment outside of the context of a completed investigation."

Tc : 2:44 "these patients are being treated terrible i mean at least with me i can say something.

Some of them can't even say anything and they lay in bed.

2:53."

Tc : 05:34 "from the video that she posted, what stands out to you the most?

I know it went on for about six minutes or so but is there something in particular that really bothers you?

My mom, she's trying to help her self but even in the worst living conditions possible she still fighting for everyone else."

Gary liberatore, news channel 2.> news channel two will be following up with the grand tommorrow as well.
