WAAY 31's Breken Terry joined us live from Muscle Shoals with what the district plans on doing.

Plans on doing.

Breken.

>> reporter: yeah, najahe, the superintendent told me there's a lot of pressure on his shoulders and other superintendents' shoulders across the state because the state did not issue strong guidelines directing them on what to do.

Now, this back-to-school kit issued by the alabama department of public health suggested that districts may, quote, likely dismiss students, end quote.

But basically left all of the decisions up to the district.

>> typically in a bad weather event you shut down the entire school system.

That's not the way we're going to approach this, just because there's -- this is another one of those unknowns, we don't know how difficult this is going to be once we all get together.

>> reporter: superintendent chad holden said a lot of options are on the table in case of an out break.

>> it could be we shut down a classroom, wengd shut down the school while the rest of the district continues to operate.

Or if the absenteeism is high enough we may shut down the entire district.

Because we fully expect there to be covid cases, floes way around it.

>> reporter: they are starting with an alternating schedule, cutting the number of students in half.

Another 17% chose to take virtual only.

The district bought sanitizing foggers, hand sanitizer and all the other cleaning supplies.

He's preparing his teachers for virtual at the drop of a hat, too.

>> we've instructed our teachers to have two weeks' worth of lessons prepared in any time for if the teacher has to go home because they're positive or exposed or if that classroom has to go home because of a positive case or an exposure.

>> reporter: across the state of state of alabama are making similar plans to this one.

I have supposen to several of them over the past couple of days and they pretty much said the same thing.

They are expecting to see coronavirus cases once students and teachers get back inside of the classrooms here.

But no one is comfortable with saying what exact amount or how many cases is too much before
