Brett taylor.newswatch12.

Central curry school district is looking at its back to school teaching options.

Yeah.

After oregon department of education did revise school reopening metrics for now, the district is reopening with comprehensive distance learning to restart fall 2020 classes.

Joining us now, central curry school district superintendent, tim wilson.

Thank you for being with us this afternoon.

Superintendent wilson.

Absolutely it pleasure to join you in your tv audience.

Thank you.

Thank you so much.

So the first question i have for you is what is the reopening plan for central curry school district?

Number one.

So based on the, uh, most recent data as with the metrics and so on, uh, we plan to open and with comprehensive distance learning, uh, for the first six weeks of school, uh, that would be until november the second.

What revisions to the state school reopening metrics seem to most apply to your district?

Absolutely.

So as, as we watch, uh, the metrics across southern oregon, we know that curry county has the fewest amount of, uh, cases and positivity.

So that certainly liens us to be able to consider some of the exceptions to the metrics.

And so that's where we're putting a lot of our energy now.

Uh, even though we announced that we were going to start with, uh, the cdl, we, uh, hope to announce plans to open up, uh, to other groups because all of our schools are under 250 students and believe we can meet those new requirements.

We just need a little bit more time to investigate that.

Now, when we talk about these metrics revisions, do you think that it presents your school district with more of an opportunity or a challenge?

Uh, actually it is an opportunity.

Um, we believe that we can meet those requirements of 50 or less than a cohort, uh, and have students are returned to school, uh, sooner than november 2nd.

Again, not trying to make any promises till we fully vet, uh, those options.

So, when do you expect those changes to in-person learning in your district?

Sure.

Um, as i stated before the, as soon as possible, i felt i was responsible to our community to at least make a decision, which we did announce last night to our district about distance learning with the idea that we could move forward with that.

But as soon as we have all of our information, we'd be able to announce.

Uh, those revisions, it could be two weeks.

It could be three weeks, but, um, as soon as humanly possible.

Now, when we talk about returning to classrooms, what are some of the concerns you're hearing from both teachers and staff within the school?

What are the concerns both about distance learning and being in person this year?

Sure.

The, the most common, uh, concerns from staff are actually consistent with our parents as well.

But number one, it would be around children here, uh, for a working, uh, for employees.

Uh, you know, many of them have of children in our school system and rely on them being in school so that they can do their, their teaching jobs and so on.

Um, the other one is, as we do have a little more aged staff, if you will experienced.

And so that the high risk, um, for health is certainly a concern, uh, for many of our staff members.

Those are, uh, those are really the two primary ones.

Well, i'm sure that both students and parents do really appreciate all the effort that you guys are putting in.

Um, and just the mindfulness of kind of this goes beyond just learning.

This is everyday life for students.

Absolutely.
