The mississippi state department of health reports 825 new cases of covid-19 with 37 new deaths.

There are 63 new cases among long term care facilities within the state.

Since march 11, the total number of cases is more than 71 thousand with more than 2 thousand deaths.

It's presumed that more than 49 thousand mississippians have recovered from the virus.

A mississippi congressman says he believes there will be a vaccine soon for covid-19.

District one congressman trent kelly says "operation warp speed" is moving swiftly.

That is the name of the project to get a vaccine tested, and available to u s citizens as soon as possible.

Congressman kelly says government agencies and private drug firms are working hard to come up with a vaccine that can be tested and delivered to the public.

"we want a vaccine but we want a safe vaccine, we don't want to find out ten years from now we rushed something.

But this has moved faster than any vaccine in history, usually a two to three year process, but doing it in months rather than years, and i feel confident we will have a vaccine, multiple vaccines tested and safe and help us stop the spread of covid 19."

Congressman kelly says he has doubts about russia's claims that they have a vaccine for covid 19.

He says their vaccine hasn't met the required protocols.

Operation warp speed was put together by the trump administration earlier this year.

It's a back to school like never before, with the coronavirus forcing schools across the nation to take measures aimed at preventing outbreaks of the virus and students having to adjust to the ''new normal'' on campus.

Cbs news correspondent michael george has more from new york.

In fort worth...texas christian university freshman rachel adelsburg moved into her dorm ááthis week.áá "i just feel really fortunate that we actually get to come and move in.

I mean a lot of my friends from home are getting stuck at home this year."

As schools and parents across the u-s make their plans, white house coronavirus task force member doctor anthony fauci is urging everyone to follow cdc guidelines.

''the driving force will always be the safety, the welfare and the health of the children and the teachers.'' but bumps in the road back to school are already appearing.

''it definitely became much more real when we realized it was probably in a floor close to us.'' students at the university of north carolina chapel hill are on high alert after the school reported clusters of covid-19 cases in two residence halls.

''i mean there's still parties going on there's still people not wearing masks.'' the university of notre dame says it's confident it can continue in- person classes after an early spike in coronavrus cases.

The school says it's ready to return to distance learning if necessary.

Jacob o'hara, a senior, says he's taking precautions.

"so we checked it out early on..

One party, one bar..

And it didn't seem terribly safe so we're kind of sticking to ourselves for the time being and seeing how it plays out."

And columbia university in new york city has reversed course, announcing undergraduate classes this fall will be virtual.

Michael george, cbs news, new york.

In early september, new york university, one of the nation's largest private schools, plans to welcome students from around the world with a mix of in-person, remote and blended classes.

Mississippi is another step closer to a new state flag design to go on november's ballot// the commission has been working with a designer to make some tweaks to many of the originally submitted designs// as courtney ann jackson explains, they narrowed it down to the top nine friday// the commission is charged with finding a flag with strong symbolism while being simplistic enough that a child can recreate it.

"this is something we need to recognize.

When people see our flag, they recognize immediately that it's mississippi."

Thousands of submissions were narrowed to hundreds and then down to less than a dozen ahead of friday's meeting.

"all of the people of mississippi who have taken a keen interest in what we are doing, especially those 3,000 people that have submitted designs."

This is a nine member commission but they all agree that they've heard a lot of input from community members.

The magnolia is on several of the top designs and has gotten mixed feedback.

"the magnolia makes me think of mississippi and hospitality.

I've had the same comments that katie did.

I've had a lot of people who liked it and a lot of people who don't."

"specific concerns about the magnolia flower relating to it as perceived as possibly a symbol of the old south."

One member wanted to ensure another element was incorporated.

"what is our state named for?

The river."

While the band of choctaw indians tribal chief cyrus ben requested that some stars be tweaked to contained more symbolism.

"you see that in our clothing, our beadwork and our basket designs.

You see the diamond designs.

And the eastern diamondback rattlesnake is also a respected animal that also protected the crops in the field.

So, that's where you see that diamond design incorporated."

You, the public, won't get to cast a binding vote till november but a non-binding poll including the top nine will be posted to the department of archives and history website.

The commission will select the final five next tuesday and those five will be made into flags.

Their final decision will be made by september 2.

A former law enforcement officer wants kids that are going back to school to see a different side of the badge.// today, jermandy jackson and other volunteers handed out supplies those students will need in the classroom.// our savannah gaido joins us live in the studio with why the backpacks came with a message of hope.// jackson tells me a he sees a gap in society between police and the young people they are sworn to serve.// now, he's using his experience as a former officer to make an impact in the community.// one by one... volunteers handed out backpacks and school supplies, hoping to send a lesson these kids will carry with them for a lifetime.

"through giving away book bags and having law enforcement interacting with the kids it sees them at a different level.

A place where they aren't writing tickets, a time where they aren't taking anyone to jail, but are actually giving to them."

"we don't want kids to be afraid of the police.

So we are just trying to interact with them as much as we can.

So what jermandy is doing is a really good opportunity to help the community and help some kids."

Jermandy jackson is a former law enforcement officer.

He hopes this event will make a positive impact in shannon and change how theses kids view cops.

"again, so much going on in the community is negative so they have a negative idea about law enforcement, no respect for law enforcement, and that barrier must come down.

Things like this help with the tension problems."

Valerie fields is proud of her nephew for helping families that aren't able to get school supplies "so what he did is when they at least go back to school, they will have something to start with and toe excite them and to pump them up about going back to school."

Jackson believes there is a way for residents and law enforcement to work together.

He hopes this lesson will stick on the streets and in the classroom.

And part of law enforcement, the first thing is serving and protecting.

So at this moment we are serving and protecting."

Each backpack included, pencils, paper, a bottle of water and a special card from jermandy saying to keep your head up, pay attention and stay focused in school.

Three tupelo police officers and a 9 1 1 operator are recognized for their teamwork helping a motorist whose brakes failed on a busy street.

On july 23rd, saltillo resident armani winfun was driving home from her job, when the brakes in her car failed.

Winfun called 9 1 1, remaining calm as she told operator bailey whitehead what was going on.

Winfun was driving down north gloster, she put her car in neutral, and three tupelo police units responded.

The officers blocked oncoming traffic and led winfun into the chili's parking lot, where they were able to stop her car.

Whitehead, along with officers john moses, karlo iglesias and brent thornton received plaques for their efforts.

"i just want to say i greatly appreciate yall and i"m very thankful for yall , cause i know i couldn't have done it without yall and the lord on my side."

"it means a lot, it really does, it shows that everything that comes along with the job, it matters so much and it makes a big difference."

"we actually don't have any protocol for this, i hadn't seen this in 25 years so we were just throwing out any ideas we could to get this car stopped."

Armani also gave the officers a gift.

She has since had her brakes repaired and is on the road again.

One call... that's all...a familiar face sponsors an event giving back to essential workers... more on this story coming up after the break...stay with us.

It was a chance for the people of booneville to come together today as volunteers provided a special meal for essential workers in the community.

Wcbi's chad groening reports there was plenty of fish...and french fries...and volunteers on hand...to serve it....the event was sponsored by u- turn ministry, co- founded by three men who want to make a difference in the community.

"u-turn means to turn and go the other way to make a 180 degree u- turn.

All three of us come from the streets.

We made a u-turn.

God got us and we started this ministry and we're serving our community and giving back.

We deal with the youth.

We're mentors.

We're putting on school programs, back to school programs. we're also a street ministry.

We deal with people with addiction, people coming out of prison like a second chance to start over.

" "this is a day that we just decided to put forth an effort to show our thanks and appreciation to all the essential workers through this pandemic.

It's been a hard go for everyone but we felt like with where we're coming from and what's all going on in the world today that it would be a great idea to try to give back and unite the community by way of this meal out here just to show our appreciation for everyone that's been hurt during this stroke."

"this entire thing was a whole effort to see all different walks of life, different churches, different businesses all in the community contributed to this event happening today and we also wanted to display something here in booneville that we do it big here.

We booneville strong and we believe that we can all come together to turn not only just a few people around, but an entire community."

As jackson said the event would not have been possible without sponsors like attorney richard schwartz.

"it's just to honor all citizens of booneville but especially honoring our first line responders.

They are heros.

And i want you when you see a nurse you see a fireman, a policeman, an ambulance driver thank them because you need to because they're putting their life on the line with this covid disaster."

And booneville mayor chris lindley appreciated how the community came together to make this event successful.

"this is an amazing event that u-turn ministries is putting on.

Ansen christian was the one who organized this event.

He came to me and i said it's a wonderful opportunity to help the essential workers, the hospital workers, fire, police, ems, post office.

There's a lot of people that get overlooked when you say essential workers and we're trying to include everybody."

Chad groening, wcbi news, booneville.

The event organizers said that would keep serving until the ran out of fish.

Nat pop 4 sec after the come from behind win in last season's state championship game against oak grove, the oxford chargers love the sweet taste of victory and don't want anything else.

"to be on the first team to win.

My brother played.

He wasn't able to win it, but we're going to show people it wasn't a mistake last year.

We're here to keep winning."

"we got everybody coming at us because we won state last year.

They want to beat us.

We got to come harder than we did last year.

Practice harder so we can have a better game plan for the people who want to beat us this year."

"it's always been a huge goal for our program when i was a player here, as an assistant coach here, was to finally get over that hump and win a state championship.

Now that we've done it, it's no time to sit back and relax and be content where we are.

It's time to get better."

The chargers have the tall task of replacing key players from last season's offense featuring quarterback john meagher and now auburn tiger j.j.

Peguess.

But the team says they're looking forward to the challenge.

"you can't really replace j.j.

Peguess.

We got to find a way to make it work without him.

Whether it's coming up with a different game plan or getting a guy to fill some of his duties and giving the other duties to another guy, we got to come up with something."

"i think those guys and the guys that came before them laid a great foundation for our team and for our program and how we go about our business.

We have some great leaders, and some players wrecited abt th haven' played a lot in the past sitting behind some of those older players.

We're excited about seeing them get on the field and seeing what they can do."

Oxford also lost 10 starters from last season's team so some new guys are stepping into much larger roles.

But the one returning starter is doing everything he can to give the younger guys the knowledge he gained.

"last year i had everyone ahead of me that already had some playing time.

I was following them.

They were teaching me the ropes.

This year i feel like i got to teach them.

The guys that were under me that didn't get a lot of play time.

Teach them the things that we need done for the game."

"we got a lot of new faces on defense.

A lot of guys we're excited about getting out there.

We think have really put in a lot of work over the years and developed into good players."

Despite the turnover, the team is confident in their chances of defending the 6a crown.

"obviously, as the defending champion you're trying to defend that and to some extent you're not really an unknown commodity, but certain individuals definitely are so we're excited about seeing what they do."

"every year we're the underdogs.

We're the underdogs last year but we're letting everybody know we're here.

We got the same mindset coming in that we got to be great."

Oxford starts their title defense on the road against grenada september 4th.
