A man in a car shoots into a crowd of people at a tupelo nightclub, and some people in the crowd shoot back.

Tupelo police are investigating an incident that took place around 2 a.m.

This morning.

Witnesses say a man in a red ford explorer fired into a crowd of people at club heat on senter street-- that's when a few other people reportedly fired back.

Twenty minutes later, tupelo police attempted to stop a red ford explorer on south green street.

At first, the explored did not stop and led police on a brief chase.

Once stopped, officers arrested driver kendrick d.

Spears for misdemeanor offenses as well as felony possession of narcotics .

Police also found two firearms, and spears' vehicle had bullet holes along the sides.

Police say a second suspect was detained and interviewed at the scene and cooperated fully.

Officers say the investigation is in its early stages, and more arrests are possible.

This past friday, 58- year-old cozetta johnson was struck by an suv going south on highway 45 she didn't survive.

Aberdeen mayor maurice howard says dana keith brewer was arrested in connection with the accident.

Today, friends and family of johnson gathered near the spot she was killed at.

Aberdeen native james ivoroi says he knew johnson personally, and everybody in the area was impacted "people are going to be concerned about what is going on.

And then our little town here, everybody knows each other.

And then with the accident that happened friday night, everybody is trying to see what took place, what is going to be done, what kind of justice is going to be justified with the accident and what procedures are going to be taken in this matter, so everybody is concerned.

It is a concerned neighborhood."

The aberdeen police department is investigating the accident and were assisted at the scene by monroe county deputies.

The mississippi state department of health reports 381 new cases of covid-19 with 4 new deaths.

There are 174 active outbreaks among long term care facilities within the state.

Since march 11, there have been more than 72 thousand cases of coronavirus with more than 2 thousand deaths.

It's presumed that more than 49 thousand mississippians have recovered from the virus.

With the coronavirus expected to prompt millions to vote by mail in the november election, the u-s postal service is at the center of a growing poltical storm.

''the u.s. postal service is a fundamental part of our democracy//it's not a service that should be taken away.'' protesters turned up outside the washington, d-c, home of the u-s postmaster general, louis dejoy, this weekend, some calling for him to step down.

On saturday, president trump was asked if his recently hand- picked postmaster general is hampering the service to discourage mail-in voting.

The steps he is taking are trying to stop the tremendous losses that have taken place for many, many years.

He's trying to streamline the post office and make it great again, ok.'' dejoy has said he overhauled the post office to fix its dire financial situation...but its internal watchdog is investigating.

Democrats accuse the trump campaign donor of working with the president to undermine mail-in voting...with moves like eliminating overtime.

''the problem with the mail in voting, number one you never are going to know when the election is over.'' president trump insists mail-in ballots are vulnerable to fraud, which research has shown to be rare.

Cbs news has learned the postal service sent letters to áallá 50 states and the district of columbia warning their deadlines for accepting mail- in ballots may result in thousands ánotá being counted.

''this is more about states trying to recreate how they get their ballots.

They're trying to do it on a compressed timeline that just won't work.'' democrats want dejoy and the chairman of the postal service board of governors to testify on capitol hill.

11:47:32 am ''if dejoy refuses to appear, he should be stamped return to sender.

As election day draws closer, cbs news has confirmed house speaker nancy pelosi and other democratic leaders are considering an early return from august recess to address the postal service crisis.

Tom hanson/cbs news in a statement today, the postal service told cbs news it would postpone removing mail boxes in low- density areas for 90 days...but the timing was not clear.

Just a few days ago governor tate reeves announced participants in k-12 extracurricular activities can have two people attend the events.

But the exact impact covid-19 will have on recreation leagues is still up in the air.

Soccer registration is still open columbus and organizers hope it wont be cancelled our savannah gaido has the story.

Columbus parks and recreation continues to sign- up soccer players.

The season could be kicking off soon, and parents are hoping covid-19 doesn't give the season a red card...stopping it completely.

"nobody really doesn't know anything about their concerns with the number of children that will be affected when school starting and then adding sports on top of that is can be very scary."

Columbus parks and recreation director greg lewis says every precaution will be taken to protect the players and coaches, especially social distancing on the sideline.

"we will take whatever safe measures that we could on the sideline and dealing with the parents" celeste gillis has already registered her daughter for the upcoming season, but knows the coronavirus could stop the season in its tracks.

"children don't really social distance really well at all no matter what.

So we can do all that we can to help them social distance and try, but i don't think it matters what we are doing whether its soccer or anything, i mean its going to be constantly reminding them and teaching them its not just a soccer thing, its the existence of children and not knowing what personal space is."

If the season isn't cancelled, lewis says they can have extra benches for players to sit and make sure only certain people are on the field "even though we know that we are dealing with things that are in certain as each day goes by but we still want to offer that registration process even if something should change.

However if the season is not allowed we would just gladly give them a refund of their money."

Lewis says registration will continue until next saturday.

Today on mom to mom we have a genius substitute for that play sand.

We know that little babies love to put things in their mouth, especially playing in the sand.

And we definitely don't want them putting sand in their mouth.

Right?

It's sticky, it won't come off, and it just will never leave their mouth.

So i came across this edible sand that these kids can play in and i really wish i would have found out when my kids were younger.

So you just need cheerios and a blender.

So we're going to take these cheerios and just pour them in our blender, and it doesn't matter how much you put in there, you're just going to forum until you get enough in there and then we're going to put the lid on.

So we're just going to grind this up pretty much until it's pulverized.

And as you can see it's making the sand.

It even looks like sand.

How fun is this?

I am so jealous.

So we're just going to sift it out a little bit, throw our little toys in there, and let them have fun.

I have to say this is the perfect solution for those little ones who don't really understand why they can't swallow real sand.

But now they can have cheerio edible sand.

You've probably seen dozens of them in your lifetime...those tall, white, puffy thunder-clouds towering in the summertime.

But in this week's weather whys, meteorologist trevor birchett shows you an interesting weather phenomenon to look out for when you see these storms building.

I don't know about you, but i absolutely love watching clouds form.

Maybe that's just because i'm a weather geek, but i'm sure some of you agree.

One of the most interesting clouds is the cumuloniumbus cloud, those are the really tall storm clouds that keep growing and growing taller and taller.

But eventually...they have to stop growing...and they actually start spreading out, as if they've hit a ceiling.

This creates what is known as an anvil cloud, where the top of the cloud is spread out, kind of like an anvil.

Now of course the cloud didn't actually hit a physical ceiling, but there is a point in the atmosphere where it can't get any taller.

Did you know there are actually several parts of the atmosphere?

The bottom layer is known as the troposphere, and it continues for about 7 miles above the ground.

In this layer, the air is warmest at the surface, and gets colder and colder as you go up.

That is, until you hit the top of the troposphere, known as the tropopause.

This is where the next layer, the stratosphere begins.

In the stratosphere, temperatures actually get warmer as you go higher up.

This is important, because thunderstorms can only keep growing if the air is warm on the bottom, and colder higher up.

So when the storms build all the way up to the tropopause, the air starts getting warmer with height, and the storms can't build up anymore.

So, in theory, they've hit the "ceiling" and have to start spreading outward.

So anytime you see this, tell your friends that the storm hit the tropopause, and you'll sound really smart!

There are exceptions to this though, very strong storms can penetrate this layer and grow up a little taller, and that's when we get what's referred to as an overshooting top.

Pretty cool!

Courtney sports open cw4 9 áááintro bbááá age is but a number, except when you're playing physical 5a ball like the saltillo tigers.

Having a younger team has plagued the tigers over the last few seasons.

Head coach ryan summers says over time, his team will be ready to compete.

"we just needed some time to grow up, mature, get in the weight room and get to work," summers said.

"we've done that.

We're hoping that another year of working in the weight room and learning our offense and defense will help us in the fall."

"the culture has changed around here," senior wr braham rinehart said.

"everything about it.

We uplift each other.

We're not negative.

The training has been different.

It's been more intense."

"i'm trying to work on my leadership," junior rb, lb jaden warren said.

"trying hard.

I've been watching more film.

Always getting bigger and stronger.

I work on that every year, but just trying to become a bigger part of the team."

Saltillo will have to replace a few players on the offensive line and find a new receiver.

However, the tigers bring back nearly the team's entire defense.

The tigers want to improve the team's overall game going into the new season.

"with everybody coming back they understand it better.

Maybe a few wrinkles here and there but the main concepts are going to be the same," summers said.

"we're not the saltillo we used to be.

We're different with a winner's mindset.

Just focusing on winning don't focus on the negative," rinehart said.

"just trying to keep others up whenever we're doing bad or even when we're doing good trying to keep everybody humble and stay on a level playing field.

Just go out there and motivate my team to win," junior qb jake prather said.

Saltillo is excited for the tigers season to get underway against itawamba ahs on september 4th.

"really just ready to be out there with all my friends and with my family watching me.

Just go out there and ball," prather said.

"we're just looking forward to playing.

We lost out on spring.

We lost out on the 7- on-7 during the summer.

The kids are ready to play, the coaches are ready to play, the fans are ready for us to play.

We're hoping we get to play," summers said.
