Ots image:right teens & gun violence gun1.jpg as another lexington teenager fights for his life as the result of gun violence, police, the courts and mental health professionals issue a call to action.

The latest shooting was wednesday at an apartment on garden springs..

Abc 36's christy bollinger tells us city leaders say it's time for the community to step up.

Christy"the city of lexington has lost six teenagers to gun violence since april 21."

And in just 12 days, there's been six shootings involving teens..

Four of them ending in deaths.

"we can't have anymore of our young people's lives lost."

City leaders and professionals say the community must step up.

"we have to unite to turn our children away from a path of violence."

Police chief lawrence weathers says many young people feel they don't have futures.

"our youth are telling us something.

To me, they're telling me they're looking for direction."

And lexington is not alone.

Cities across the country are seeing the same senseless trend.

Mayor linda gorton says in a pandemic kids are more isolated... no sports... no school..

No church.... jobs hard to find.

"at every turn, our young people are cut off from the people who might normally help them.

Mentors..

Coaches... teachers.

Covid makes it hard to address the challenges young people... and their families, face.

Even worse, many teens tell experts they carry guns for protection.

Criminal justice agencies are starting a juvenile treatment court... to link kids with help they need.

"a sixteen year old in court and they reveal that they've already lost ten friends people in their own age group to gun violence in their short life it's hard for us to expect a different outcome."

The chief says trauma following violence requires a community prepared to help... and that's what's needed now.

"all we need to do is step up own up and honor up."

Terrifying moments for three workers in downtown lexington last night... after the suspended work platform they were on collapsed.

But specialized training helped the lexington fire department get all three safely to the ground.

According to firefighters, the three workers, who work for structural systems repair group in cincinnati, were properly attatched to their safety gear in case of a sitatuion like this one.

All three walked away with no injuries.

One was able to lower himself down to the ground... captain chris rudd says firefighters were able to get to the other two safely and had them on the ground in about 10 minutes.

"the very first arriving companies, which weren't technically trained, with no special equipment were able to effect the rescue with a ground ladder.

So that's by far the safest of putting someone on rope and then the second and little bit higher patient or victim was rescued by the ariel device at forty feet."

L3: abc 36 news white firefighters rescue workers from dangling platform lexington a technical rescue is anything that requires special training, special certification, and special equipment.

Across the city there are four rescue engines, those members go through technical rescue training.

That training can include multiple catagories... rope rescue, large animal rescue, machinery entanglement, trench collapse rescue and many more.

First reported by matt jones and kentucky sports radio then confirmed by a u-k athletics spokesperson...the u-k football walked out of practice today.

This as a form of protest against racial injustice in america.

Up next... see what landed our 9-1-1 hero in the right place at the right ti c1 3 moment.

As abc 36's cody adams explains, that was certainly the case for this months 911 hero.

It was a typical summer day shift for mt.

Sterling police officer cody mcdaniel.

Except on this day he had to go a different route than he typically would.

Cody mcdaniel: the actual bridge on locust street was out and i was going to help another officer on a call so i had to turn around and go back up that way because the bridge was out.

And as fate would have it... it's a good thing he did.

Cody mcdaniel: as i came around i seen smoke from the house.

Once officer mcdaniel saw the smoke he rushed toward it.

That's when he saw the fire and bystanders told him someone was inside... he knew there was no time to wait..

They told me someone was in there i didnt think about it i just went straight in and then once we got kind a trapped i was trying to get myself and her out as safely as i could at this same time another officer on the force... micah williams... was off duty, although he was technically working his second job as a member of the fire department that day.

When i arrived the ladder was on the window and numerous people he arrived on the scene to assist any way he could.

They told me there was a firefighter in there he and i tried to get her out and then officer mcdaniel came in and the three of us were able to get her out safely.

The two men say it was definitely fate.

They both just happened to be in the right place in the right time.

I believe everything happens for a reason, that bridge was out for a reason, i went the way i did for a reason, and hopefully it was to save her life.

Both williams and mcdaniel say they didn't do it alone.

Saving the woman's life took help from other responders and members of the community.

News broke wednesday night the kentucky board of education would be meeting to talk c1 3 about fall sports in kentucky.

At first it looks as though after getting clearance from the khsaa, the government and local school boards...sports had another hurdle to clear.

The board's interim commissioner kevin c.

Brown released a statement they will not discuss canceling fall sports, but since the khsaa is under them they felt the need to review how it affects the health and safety of students.

Last season, for the first time since 2004 the fleming county panthers won double digit games.

Abc 36 sports director bryan kennedy and the 36 blitz rolls to flemingsburg tos ee if the panthers have what it takes to do that again.

Daniel watkins senior lineman "it's already 9 o'clock and you're out here running.

It's not fun, but you know of it wants to lose.

That's just something you gotta remember.

Everybody else is gonna be working too so you just gotta work twice as hard.

We're not as big as the teams we play.

The team we played last year was a lot bigger than us, but you just know you gotta work on your reps and get your reps in and there's brother things you can do to make up for that size gap.

Zeke conn senior qb/mlb "we might now have the most talent, but i believe this team has more heart than anybody else and we will give it our all.

We work harder than anybody else."

Whether it was talent, work ethic or heart...last season the panthers figured it out.

After only winning four games in 2018, they bounced back 10 wins last season and played bell county for a region title.

Daniel watkins "well it was nice as freshman of course they made the run and won the district and everything it was a big thing, but you're just a freshman on the sideline.

You don't really know what that feels like.

And then you know we're really down the sophomore year.

Lose a lot of games.

Lose bad to a lot of teams. and then you're able to come back your junior year, make a run, get a lot of wins and make a lot of good memories."

The man behind that bounce back...senior quarterback johnny maher.

Who threw for more than 2400 yards and ran for more than 1100 yards.

Bill spencer fleming county head football coach "johnny was huge for us last year and as a junior he kinda struggled on offense playing a new position.

We knew he was going to be better last year.

We didn't know that he was gonna be that much better last year like he was.

To be 3a player of the year was huge for our school.

And we don't really want to have one guy that does everything for us.

It kinda worked out that way last year, but when you ask him i think he'll tell ya a lot of that went to his offensive line, our fullbacks and guys who blocked for him and our receivers."

They may have lost maher, but good for the panther...they have a lot of those guys coming back.

Zeke conn "we got three senior lineman coming back.

We just gotta fill one spot so i feeling confident about that.

Our strong part on defense is we're not afraid to hit anybody."

Bryan kennedy abc 36 sports "as the panthers look to build on their success from last season.

They know, win or lose, they have a community who has their back and will be with them every step of the way."

Daniel watkins "a bunch of the moms of the seniors they're always there.

They're having tailgating before games and doing a lot of stuff the week before because they said, we know you're playing one of the top teams in the state and even if you don't come out and win we want you to remember it as a good thing so that's something to strive for.

Bill spencer "fleming county we are one show county.

If you wanna watch football on friday nights you come here.

We went to bell county last year and we had to take four buses for our parents to go down.

You know it was just a tremendous experience for them and the community really rallies behind us."
