Huntsville City Schools postpone the rivalry game between Grissom and Huntsville High Schools following racially motivated and violent posts on social media.

New information - tonight - we're learning more about huntsville city schools decision to postpone the rivalry game between grissom and huntsville high schools following racially motivated and violent posts on social media.

Waay 31's max cohan joins us live from milton frank stadium where that game was set to be played on friday, max?

I talked to a spokesman for the district.

He told me the district is disappointed to see posts like the ones shared - and made the decision to postpone friday's game so that they can move forward.

"following the incident, we wanted to make sure we had time to use this as a teaching moment with students, to make sure we had time to engage with our students about how inappropriate, how insensitive, these posts were and how ultimately they're unacceptable and will not be tolerated at huntsville city schools."

Craig williams, the district's chief communications officer, told me that the issue has been addressed and now the focus is to make sure students understand the district's values -- such as equality and diversity.

Williams told me this game is essentially the iron bowl of huntsville and said there's always some tension with this rivalry.

But after social media posts showing a photo of dereck chauvin with his knee on george floyd's neck when he was killed surfaced - with chauvin labeled huntsville high school and floyd labled grissom - williams said the district knew something had to be done.

He said postponing the game until sept 24th will also give the district more time to extra implement security measures.

"things like having additional security guards in place for the upcoming game."

The district has no specified what the punishment will be for students involved -- only stating that it will be in accordance with the behavioral learning guide.

Reporting live in huntsville - max cohan, waay 31 news.

The school board president said the incident was shocking - and they expect better from students.

The district is still investigating who took
