We begin with a developing story..

Ruth bader ginsburg, the powerhouse supreme court justice and champion of women's rights, has died at the age of 87...sparking passionate tributes and already...a battle over who will replace her.

We'll talk about that and show you a firm statement from senate majority leader mitch mcconnell...but first, ginsburg's life.

Karen travers reports she was surrounded by family in her washington, d-c home as she died this evening from complications due to cancer.

Script: she was just the second woman to serve on the u.s. supreme court.

But ruth bader ginsburg's true legacy may be as the "legal architect" of the equal rights movement.

She graduated at the top of her class at columbia law school.

Her career began in the 1950s when sexual and racial discrimination was a fact of life.

Sot ginsburg not a law firm in the city of new york bid for my employment as a lawyer eventually, she was hired by the american civil liberties union.

There, she would help lead a movement that changed the country - challenging laws that treated men and women differently...in employment, housing, and government benefits.

She was appointed to the high court by president clinton in 1993.

Sot president clinton in her pioneering work on behalf of the women of this country she has compiled a truly historic record of achievement.

As a supreme court justice, she was best known for the far-reaching decision that struck down the virginia military institute's men-only admission policy.

Sot ginsburg: "those doors that had been shut tight against us, are now open.

So long term, i remain optimistic."

Justice ginsburg was known as a judicial workhorse - she worked throughout her treatment for cancer in 1999 and again 10 years later.

In january 2019, her recovery from surgery to remove cancerous legions from her lung forced her to miss oral arguments - but she continued working from home.

Ginsburg became something of a pop culture icon late in her life - this comedic but still reverent impression on saturday night live... nats documentary titled "rbg" after a nickname given to her by fans...the 2018 film "on the basis of sex" focusing on her push for equal rights.

On social issues like civil rights, abortion, and separation of church and state she was a consistent liberal.

Yet she won the admiration of many conservatives for her grasp of the law and carefully considered opinions.

Already tonight...there is c1 3 talk about who will replace ginsburg...and the reason for that has a lot to do with u-s senate majority leader mitch mcconnell of kentucky.

He gained a lot of notoriety in 2016...the last election year...when he refused to act on president barack obama's nomination to replace justice antonin scalia...who had just died.

Mconnell said then it was because it was an election year.

I want to show you an email i just received with a statement on that from the senate majority leader.

First, he celebrates ginsburg's life...saying "the senate and the nation mourn the sudden passing of justice ruth bader ginsburg, and the conclusion of her extraordinary american life."

...but it's the end...this part here...getting a lot of talk tonight.

Mcconnell says concisely: "president trump's nominee will receive a vote on the floor of the united states senate."

He explains 2020 is different than 2016 because americans have elected a republican senate majority and a republican president so it follows precedent the senate would hold a confirmation hearing.

After reaching the one thousand mark.

Today governor andy beshear announced eight new deaths from the virus..

The total is now..

One thousand, one hundred and one.

Gov andy beshear "folks 1,101 kentuckians is far too many to lose and how we act, the choices we make are going to determine how many more we loose going forward.

I mean our total loss went up ten percent in ten days, and so while i'm happy that our positivity rate is going down in the right direction, we have so much work to do, and the lives of kentuckians are on the line."

According to governor beshear..

The positivity rate in the state is now..

3 point 6 percent.

The governor announced..

777 new cases of the virus today.

The total number of positives in the commonwealth is now..

60,128.

Of the new cases..

Ninety-seven... were of children ages 18 and younger.

14 of those..

Were children ages five and under.

The youngest was only two-months- old.

Estill and jackson counties, are two of the counties..

Now in the red..

On kentucky's covid -19 color coded rate map, because of high positive numbers of the virus.

According to the state..

When a county is in the red..

That means..

In-person classes at schools... should be suspended, if students, weren't already in virtual- only classes.

In estill county..

The board of education..

Announced today..

That it's voted to delay in-person instruction until october 19th.

The district has also suspended... all its sports games, and practices for at least a week, beginning this sunday, sept.

20th.

The district says it will make a decision..

For sports activies, for the next..

A new program at the kentucky blood center will test your donation for coronavirus antibodies.

It's all part of an effort to find coronavirus survivors who can donate plasma to those currently suffering.

Abc 36's bobbi mcswine spoke to one donor who says he's happy to help.

###### "if you donate blood anyway, i mean i think it's a win-win."

The kentucky blood center is now testing for coronavirus antibodies .and eamonn aye-men fitzgerald says he's all for it.

Eamonn: "the idea that you're not only helping somebody because you're donating blood, but the possibility of helping more people with covid."

Fitz has been donating blood for more than 20 years.

He says he does it because he wants to help.but also because he knows how essential it is.

"i have a friend who needed blood transfusions many years ago and she wouldn't have survived had she not had blood transfusions, so she always makes sure to thank any of our friends that donate."

Kentucky blood center's mandy brajuha bray-you-ah says donors are needed now more than ever.

"we know people come in to give blood because they want to be that lifesaver."

Now, there might be a second way they can save lives.

The blood center will test every donation for coronavirus antibodies...meaning you might also be able to donate plasma that could help coronavirus patients recover.

Mandy: "if you're just curious whether or not you've been exposed to the virus, this is a win-win situation.

You can save lives and find out that information."

Brajuha says the need for blood has only increased during the pandemic.

"hospitals are doing more surgeries.

More patients are in need - more traumas.

And so we definitely want to see those - we call them crisis heroes - we want them to come back out again."

And just like fitz.she says it benefits everyone.
