The firefighters at the New Hartford Fire Department geared up on Saturday for a CNY Memorial Stair Climb unlike any other.

It honors those first responders who lost their lives during 9/11.

Due to covid the event went entirely virtual.

News channel 2's brent kearney shows us how fire departments aren't letting the virus keep them from honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

None "we're going to be doing a 3.4 mile walk through the village.

We're going to go down genesee street and then back up just to remember everyone that was lost on 911.

The climb was supposed to take place earlier this month, but due to covid, the event went virtual.

"it was postponed and so then they said any department that wanted to do it virutally they can so we did that.

This group of 20 joined fire agencies from across the area that are taking part.

Firefighter mike galagano made the climb last year.

"its tough its not an easy climb.

It's 110 stories in the end so up and down is about 110 stories so its pretty tough but its worth it.

Right as the clocked switched over to 8:46, the time when the first plane hit the north tower...nat bell.....the walk began.

"343 new york city fire fighters died that day.

So we planned our route to about 3.43 miles to honor that."
