General motors covid-19 safety plan is what communications manager stephanie mack considers a plan that's made her feel safer at work than ever before.

Stephanie mack//gm communications manager "we have heard over and over again where people say they feel safer in the plant than they do when they go to the local grocery store."

The 'return to work safely playbook' is one to keep indiana's 6,600 employees free from the coronavirus.

Stephanie mack//gm communications manager "they know that people are not going to get into that plant if people are showing symptoms."

The gm fort wayne assembly plant shut down for eight weeks, closing on march twentieth and re-opening on june first.

United auto workers gm plant chairman rich letourneau confirms 35 positive covid-19 cases, but says they never reached the plant.

Rich letourneau//uaw 2209 gm shop chairman "we haven't really had cases that started in the plant.

We've got cases, but they were from outside the plant.

And i think we caught 100% of them before they got inside of the building."

Mack says gm has laid out clear cut safety measures.

And employees are abiding by them.

Stephanie mack//gm communications manager "we have people on the lines trying to keep people safe and they have been extremely effective.

And they are very strict.

And every employee follows them everyday, at every plant at general motors."

Latourneau says the employees are working with the changes as best as possible.

Rich letourneau//ua w 2209 gm shop chairman "they've adjusted well.

Everyone wants it over i guarantee that, but they've adjusted accordingly."

And gm plans to share the playbook with other companies when it comes to health and safety of all employees.

Stephanie mack//gm communications manager "we're recovering in a very safe way, and that's keeping our employees safe, but also employed, receiving paychecks, and we're able to keep that economy going.

So i think most people will be receptive as to what we're doing."

Now communications manager stephanie mack says with all the adjustments employees have made, the most difficult has been wearing of masks for most them because it does indeed get hot in the plant after working for so long.

But that's where fans and other arrangements come into play and employees, of course, work with the 'new normal.'
