Lee County poll workers will make fifty dollars more this year

County's Board of Supervisors approve the extra money

Welcome back to wtva 9 news at five,, i'm emily leonard lee county poll workers will get more money to work the polls this year because of the coronavirus.

The county board of supervisors approved the pay raise during a board meeting this morning... wtva's wayne hereford spoke with the county administrator about how they are getting the money.

Lee county chancery clerk bill benson told me it's sort of like hazard pay.

The state government made the money available to the county thanks to the cares act.

"the county approved the additional fifty dollars per poll worker as was authorized this past legislative session.

And approved the agreement with the secretary of state's office for the additional poll worker per precinct."

Poll workers in mississippi can make anywhere from 115 to 135 dollars per day .

Many counties had a hard time getting poll workers because of the coronavirus.

The extra fifty dollars could be an incentive for some.

"it appears seeing them coming in and out from training , that they have been very successful in obtaining poll workers and retaining those that they've used in the past."

Lee county has thirty-six voting precincts for the upcoming election.
