Gearing up for the final presidential debate as early voting numbers surge in Vigo County

Presidential candidates are preparing for the final national debate as early voting continues in communities across the country.

There’s been a massive push to get out and vote.

As a result, Vigo County has seen an impressive number of early voters for the 2020 election.

Testing of residents and staff.

Vigo county is like many others when it comes to early voting this year.

Many people are already making their voices heard.

Those left undecided nationally ..

Will have a chance to hear from the presidential candidates tonight.

It's all part of our campaign 20-20 coverage this evening.

We begin with an update on early voting here in vigo county.

Over 15-thousand people have cast their ballots.

With 9 days remaining of early voting...vigo county is on pace to cast nearly 25-thousand early votes.

For comparison...just over 21-thousand early votes were cast in the last presidential election.

The final presidential debate will take place tonight here on w-t-h-i.

It comes with a few changes.

News 10's dominic miranda spoke with a local expert today.

Dominic joins us now live in our newsroom with what you should watch.

Early voting numbers are up in vigo county and across the nation.

But some people may still be undecided.

I spoke with political science professor at rose-hulman, terrence casey, today.

He told me what you should be looking out for and previewed tonight's debate.

Casey says there is a lot of polarization in this election....and a really high motivation to get out and vote.

He tells me the significance in this presidential debate mainly lies with president donald trump's performance.

"this is really the last big chace for donald trump to turn things around.

Right now he is down in national polls.

He's down in a lot of battleground states.

This is going to be the last significant event before election day.

If he's going to change the momentum of the race, this is his last chance to do so."

With early voting being up so much...casey says the debate does lose a little significance.

He believes that people mostly have their minds made up and that there aren't many undecided voters.

"what i think there may be a larger number of, and it's a little hard to tease out until after the election, is the number of people who don't particularly like either choice.

Their minds aren't made up and it's not because they are undecided, but because they have to choose between two options they don't find particularly palatable" now tonight's debate is the final one before election day and it will feature a few changes.

The candidates' micorphones will be "muted" while the other person responds.

However, there will be time for discussion.

Tonight's debate airs right here on w-t-h-i beginning at 9 pm and is slated for 2 hours.
