Get Fit Friday 10/23/20 - Tracking Your Progress Through Fitness Gadgets

Now that you've gotten started on a regular fitness routine, you may want to invest in various fitness-related gadgets that can track your intensity level and exertion, such as Fitbits and Myzone.

Beth jeffers: good morning, and welcome to get fit friday.

I'm beth jeffers, joined here with whitney brown.

Whitney brown: good morning.

Beth jeffers: we were at the fitness factor this morning.

Whitney brown: we are.

Beth jeffers: hey, we wanted to talk to you a little bit.

Last week, we just talked about how important it is to get going.

Let's work on getting healthy in the gtr, in this fall.

Beautiful, beautiful weather.

But away, there's many ways to measure your effort, and you will be able to track yourself a little bit more.

Whitney brown: right.

So, once you start your exercise program, i think the first thing is just to get started.

It doesn't have to be fancy gadgets and all of those types of things.

But if you're looking to increase your intensity a little bit, maybe track that and have a little bit more accountability, we have a couple different options.

First of all, most of the watches, and smartwatches, and smartphones, and things like that have different apps and different ways that they can track not only your steps, but they can track your heart rate and those types of things.

Whitney brown: so, those are good if you already have one.

But at the fitness factor, we use something called a myzone effort belt.

It's a heart rate monitor that tracks your effort into different colors and color tiles.

And so, we have big monitors around the facility so that we can monitor each other's heart rates and our own.

And it really creates a really fun environment of the effort and who's giving what, and it gives you your calorie track and all kinds of really fun things.

Beth jeffers: right.

And you don't have to have a gym to do it.

Whitney brown: no.

Beth jeffers: you can also use your phone, and you could be outside walking, and you can tell how much effort you're giving, where your heart rate is.

And it's really neat.

And you really enjoy seeing where you are and how hard you're working.

And it keeps track of everything.

You don't have to do that anything.

Whitney brown: that's really nice.

Beth jeffers: that's huge.

Whitney brown: it also allows you, other myzone users, you can sync up with friends.

And through the app, you can see what they've done that particular day, so that you can give encouragement to each other.

You can go in their workout, and you can see how people's workouts compare, maybe, to yours.

So, it's a really fun way to have a group of friends and a community that's supporting each other, but from afar.

Beth jeffers: right.

And these, you can get a watch, but you put this definitely around your midsection.

So, it's very close to your heart, and it's very accurate.

It's a neat thing.

Or if you have a watch, it's great to start tracking yourself.

But i agree with whitney.

The biggest thing is to start, and don't worry about things.

Just listen to your body at the beginning, called rate of perceived exertion.

Just see how you feel, get going.

Whitney brown: that's right.

Beth jeffers: and then, when you get a little bit, another step, next step, add some form of effort control or, like you said, accountability.

Whitney brown: and your gym might already be doing that, so feel free to ask someone or a representative from your gym if they have a program already in place so that you can sync up with other members of your gym in your community, and enjoy comparing a little competition.

A little friendly competition.
