Madison County Coroner office takes extra precautions when responding to scenes due to coronavirus

In case the people have the virus

Patients are on ventilators.

Today - waay 31 talked with the madsion county coroner about the coronavirus vaccine.

This week - state health officer - doctor scott harris - said mortuary workers would likely be included in the first phase of people to get a vaccine because of how closely they work with people who might have the virus.

Madison county coroner - doctor tyler berryhill - told us he's watched the vaccine updates closely.

He understands why the alabama department of public health is targeting at-risk healthcare workers and vulnerable populatons in the limited supply of vaccine the state will recieve in the beginning.

He said he takes extra precautions when responding to a scene where he might have to transport someone who might have had the virus prior to their death - or is known to have it when they die.

And although he wants to get the vaccine - he is okay with stepping back and letting frontline workers in hospitals get the first shots.

Dr. tyler berryhill, madison county coroner "i'm definitely an advocate for the vaccine to get back to normal to society in our life.

Me personally with my age and my apparent good health, i would be okay with stepping back and allowing someone else to have my vaccine that it may actually give them a better chance if they were to contract the virus."
