Georgia Military College is removing it’s 99 yr old Liberty Tree.

Georgia military college will remove a piece of its history.

The liberty tree was planted in 1921 during armistice day at the former state capital.

"the regeant, kind of like our president of the dar that time commisioned all of the governors in 48 states to send her historical ground."

They were eventually able to gather soil from the remaining two states, alaska and hawaii.

When the tree was planted, gmc held a celebration marking it's importance.

"we're gonna conmemorate the tree this particular tree, when we replant a new one."

The nancy hart chapter of the daughters of american revolution will take part in the ceremony.

Once the tree is cut, the d-a-r will use the wood to make benches.

Standup: the liberty tree here behind me, is set to be removed tomorrow while some limbs are being removed today.

The vice president for engineering services at gmc, jeff gray, explains why they're removing the tree.

"we've been treating this tree for more than five years and its just before it gets unsafe."

Gray says they want to make sure children from st.

Stephen's episcopal church and gmc are safe.

He knows how big of an impact the removal will have.

"but this one is very significant as are one or two around that were planted in memory and in honor of men killed in world war one."

There is no set date yet for when the new one will be planted.
