Utica Community Fridge- an exercise in Mutual Aid

There’s now a way to help reduce food waste, while increasing food accessibility to those who could use a bite to eat.

Utica, and it won't cost you a dime to get it.

Newschannel 2's kirk tupaj tells us about the utica community fridge.

What started as a concept to help feed the local community has taken off into a mission that's only been in operation for three days now.

.

None .

None sot: hana selimovic, utica community fridge facilitator bought a fridge for $50.

Made sure that it ran first, and we started setting up where we were going to place it.

Hana selimovic and a small group of around five friends have started the utica community fridge.

Sot: hana selimovic, utica community fridge facilitator the entire idea behind the fridge is to decrease food waste while increasing food accessibility to neighborhoods that might not have as much accessibility to inexpensive groceries as others.

The refrigerator ended up here on oneida street just off of oneida square.

Anyone can walk up and help themselves to some food any time of the day or night.

Sot: tyrone henry, utica resident if you ain't got nowhere to go or something, you got food there you know.

If you can't eat, you got no money to get it, you got food there.

The fridge is also open for anyone willing to replenish it with food.

Sot: kirk tupaj the owners of the oneida mini mart that power the refrigerator, and supply it with food, didn't want to go on camera, but tell me their humbled to be able to help out.

And local residents are grateful to have the food available.

Sot: michael wright, utica resident i like it.

It gives people the opportunity even if they don't have food stamps at the time to have food available for them&that's available for& because the pantry's are closed right now so.

Thgives uso not, if we don't havto go insomy or drive by, grab a few things and then keep on pushin'.

This is a community based project, so the only ask is that you take what you need so others can too.

In utica, i'm kirk tupaj reporting for newschannel 2.> the herkimer county hunger coalition donated two thousand dollars to operation sunshine this morning.

The check presentation happened at the catholic charities building in ilion.

The money will go towards purchasing food, cloths, and toys for families this holiday season.
