Jon: four hundred thirty-seventh airlift wings all female flight.

Leah: amy russo is on the base right now with how the air force is making the airlift special.

Amy: so we mentioned earlier this month it is national women's history month.

Air force wanting to celebrate their military women as well.

Today about 90 women will participate in an airlift.

2c17 planes will be traveling from here in charleston where 11 women from the air force all female flight crew will take off.

They will fly 221 miles to pope army airfield in north carolina.

There they will be picking up an army all female crew of women.

Army women will participate in an air drop which means they will jump paratrooper style.

To have air drop qualified is rare.

Female air crew is very limited.

Don't have a lot of female pilots so really honor women's history month having all female crew.

After the jump aircrafts will return to pope to have the jump master safety personnel deplaned.

Once it is back to the original crew it will take off again to meet up with refueling aircraft where they will conduct refueling air mission in the air and after that 11 air force females will head back to joint based charleston.

11 air force women are expected to arrive back here in charleston around 2:30 p.m.

Just how rare is it to be a woman in military.

In all officials estimate 16 percent of the military is female.

The air force sitting at about 20%.

The army 17, navy 16.

Coast guard 12%, the marines at lowest at about 8%.
