Background on Chattanooga Police shooting

Chattanooga Police shot a suspect on Friday in a domestic dispute.

The hamilton county sheriff' office is investigating after a chattanooga police officer fired their weapon this afternoon.

News 12's danielle moss is on the scene.

What details can you give us danielle?

Well emily and andrew, i can tell you that c-p-d officers arrived on the scene here on premium drive for a report of a domestic dispute and according to an affidavit---they are very familiar with this home.

Police say that when they arrived on scene, they found an individual who was acting erratically.

C-p-d says that they attempted several times to get the individual to calm down.

But, the person became even more agitated and that's when the situation escalated.

Jeremy eames-"the suspect continued to get more and more aggressive.

Eventually to the point where he produced a knife, placed our officers in imminent danger and our officers were forced to respond with gunfire to mediate, mitigate that threat."

The individual is suffering from life threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital.

Police say that they recovered the knife on the scene.

Some neighbors who did not want to be on camera, told us that this was not the first incident at the home.

So---news 12 did some digging and recovered an affidavit that says a 29-year-old male was arrested at the home on march the second.

The report says that during that incident, the man threw a beer at his mother and when police arrived on scene, they found damage to a bookshelf caused by a quote long knife or sword.

Police were unable to locate the knife at that time.

The man was arrested and charged with assault, vandalism and criminal mischief.

As you all said earlier, hamilton county sheriff will be taking over the investigation from this point.

C-p-d says that all officers involved are now on administrative leave per their policy.
